Annual Progress Report on Goals

Goals Progress:

Matt Morris provided a summary prepared by Administrative and Information Services for the committee. Tammy will meet with Jennifer Cox to add the Residence Life updates. Suggestions for the initiatives were to show a stronger impact on the Long-Range Plan, include diversity, community involvement, and student initiatives, and to highlight Dining Services’ contributions.

Ken McClure said that Administrative and Information Services would be glad to incorporate these additional items into the current initiatives.

Feedback on Brochure:

Tammy said that a full update on the brochure should be ready by September 2012 for the

Administrative Council. The brochure is geared toward a wide audience including students, faculty, staff, and community members. It is planned that the brochures will be finished and printed by this fall for incoming students, and that the brochure will be included with the new student materials. 10,000 copies will be printed and Tammy and Ken will cover the cost. In order to maintain the sustainable nature of the brochure, it will be printed on recycled paper and students will be encouraged to turn their copy back in when finished for other students to use.

Overall, members seemed pleased with the layout and content. David Vaughan will have a few minor changes to the material and dining services material will be added in the “Living Green” section.

Outreach to the Community

Energy Conference Subcommittee:

Matt Morris reported that the Energy Conference Subcommittee met on June 5, 2012. In attendance were: Paige Oxendine, Janice Greene, Barbara Lucks, Bill Cheek, and Matt Morris.

The subcommittee suggested November 14 as its first choice and November 7 as its second choice for the conference.

An event idea for the conference is an hour and a half, panel discussion at either 2:00 or 3:00pm.

The subcommittee would like to see 3 to 4 panel members from the following areas: renewables, the utility industry, green building, and conservation.

The subcommittee also suggested a Keynote speaker at 6:30pm. Matt said that Dave Fraley and representatives from 3M in Columbia were possible speakers. Mike Kromrey suggested Art Boyt and Ann Childs as other possible speakers. Tammy suggested that Tom Downs might be able to get a speaker from Washington DC, such as an EPA representative. Ken said that while it may cost more, he felt the expenses could be taken care of for someone of this caliber. The subcommittee agreed that a strong speaker would help to bring in more interest from outside the university.

Finally, the subcommittee suggested showing a movie in the PSU Theater at 9:00pm which would relate to the focus areas of the conference. Paige Oxendine has contacted the Student

Activities Council to see if they could arrange to show this movie as the scheduled free student movie. Tammy will ask Janice about possible movies to show.

The Energy Conference Subcommittee will meet again in July and will update the Sustainability

Advisory Committee before the next regular meeting.

Celebrating Successes

Sharing around the room

Jeff Brown reported that Environmental Management had just hired a new student worker who is doing very well. Jeff said that there will be 12 new recycling stations to replace the older ones on campus. The bids on this project should be compiled in around a week and a half. He hopes to have the new bins by the coming fall semester. Also, he plans to have students help to get the

SustainaFund recycle bins placed around campus.

Mike Kromrey reported that the Watershed Committee has been working on a floating wetlands project which will provide shade, keep water cool, and serve as a biological water filter. The

Watershed Committee has worked on this project with the City of Springfield and student interns from Missouri State University. He said that the students have been a great help to the project.

Also, he said the Watershed Committee is working on developing summer camps to get students

and adults out to visit the Watershed Center. He said that the Watershed Center will start being rented out soon for conferences and meetings. He will bring brochures about this to the next meeting. Finally, Mike reported that the Watershed Committee is beginning an endowment campaign and will be looking for donations soon.

Paige Oxendine reported that the Student Government Association’s legislative directors were submitting their summer reports and that she is seeing many good ideas for sustainability projects. The new Director of Sustainability is Lauren Bansbach. Paige said that she has successfully transitioned into the position and has many good ideas.

Jennifer Cox reported that the carpet in Hammons House and Hutchens House were removed and new flooring is being installed. The new flooring will be more sustainable due to the fact that it will be much easier to clean and that it will require fewer harsh chemicals to install and maintain.

David Vaughan added to Jeff Brown’s report, saying that the new outdoor recycle bins will be a first at Missouri State University.

Joe Pitts reported that Dam Jam on June 9 went successfully with 182 volunteers and nearly

5,000 attendees throughout the day. The event included a concert at 3:00pm and was catered by

Chartwells. Joe said that due to the success of this event, there will be plans to do it again next year. He also reported that the Ozarks Summit at Missouri State University had 140 attendees and land conservation specialist guests. Joe also reported that the 5.5 mile easement for Ozarks

Greenways on James River was finalized and will be permanent. He said that this was the best practice to prevent pollution to the river.

Earle Doman reported that he would like for the Sustainability Advisory Committee to meet at the Recreation Center at some point to see the sustainability efforts underway.

Doug Sampson reported that the Recreation Center project has a goal of LEED Silver but on completion the center might rank even higher. There are continuing sustainability efforts with

Darr Agricultural Center and Greenwood which have been provided to LEED. Doug mentioned that September 29 is the U.S. Green Building Council’s Green Day of Service. He can share further information to those who are interested.

Anson Elliot reported that Darr Agricultural Center is looking into rain barrels called bladders which would help the center to catch more water relatively cheaply. He said that the center wants to focus more on sustainability in agricultural animal production.

Bob Eckels reported that the DNR is funding a project which will include lighting retrofits and occupancy sensors and should be completed by August. The Student Sustainability Fund provided new LED lights in the student visitor parking which has increased visibility and reduced energy consumption. Bob also reported that LED lights were used in his conference room and could possibly be used in the new classrooms in Plaster Sports Complex. Other

projects that are being worked on are restoring capacity and enhancing the chilled water loop, pursuing funding for the addition of Forsythe Athletics Center to the chilled water loop, and demand management allowing bulk feed to go to the same feed as JQH arena without increasing the electrical demand.

Tammy Jahnke summarized her presentation that was given at the June Watershed Committee meeting. She plans to post the PowerPoint presentation on the Missouri State University

Sustainability webpage.

Ken McClure reported that the Partnership for Sustainability may merge with the Ozarks Center for Sustainable Solutions (OCSS). This may help the organizations to get more help financially through grants and improve on outreach to the community.
