Kinematics Part 2: Review Problems
1.
A boat sails 8.0 km [S10.0E] through still water. What are the components of its
displacement?
2.
Determine the following:
a) d = 5.0 km [N] + 3.0 km [W]
b) d = 25 m [S] + 15 m [E] + 42 m [N] + 16 m [W] + 18 m [S]
c) d = 12 m [E] + 18 m [22 N of E]
d) d = 400 km [30 S of W] + 200 km [S] + 100 km [E]
3.
Jeff can swim 2.5 m/s in calm water. He tries to swim north across a 150 m wide
river, but does not realize that there is a current flowing with a velocity of 3.0 m/s
[W].
a) Determine Jeff’s resultant velocity vector.
b) How long does it take him to get across the river?
c) How far downstream does Jeff end up?
4.
A swimmer on the south shore of a river wishes to swim to a dock due north of
his starting point. His maximum swimming speed in still water is 4.0 km/h, and
there is a current in the river flowing at 2.5 km/h [W].
a) In what direction must he set out and continue swimming through the water?
b) If the river is 2.0 km wide, how long does it take him to make the crossing?
5.
An airplane flies with a velocity of 350 km/h [S] where there is a wind blowing
with a velocity of 45 km/h [15 W of N]. What is the resulting velocity of the
plane?
6.
A baseball is thrown horizontally at 28 m/s, released 1.8 m above the ground.
How far in front of the player will the ball land?
7.
Using a slingshot, you fire a stone horizontally from a tower that is 27 m tall. It
lands 122 m from the base of the tower.
a) What is the initial velocity of the stone?
b) What is the final velocity of the stone?
