WOW Game Title: Solar System Scramble
Content Area: Science
TEKS Focus: Our Solar System
Physical Education Unit: Locomotor, Physical Fitness
Grade: 4
Resource: Gracie Bouls, Roberta Rodriguez, and Rick Zuniga
Equipment/Materials: Blacktop or field, tennis balls labeled with the names of the
planets (four sets), one yellow hula hoop (Sun), 36 Frisbees (index cards can be used for
either tennis balls or Frisbees).
Set Up: Place the Yellow Hula hoop (Sun) in the center of the play area. Divide the
class into 4 different teams: Astros, Rockets, Comets, Meteors
Astros
Meteors
Rockets
Comets
= Frisbee to place tennis ball in.
Activity:
On signal (blast off) the first student will jog (hop, jump, gallop, skip) to the sun and pick
up a planet ball and place it in a Frisbee in order of the planets from the sun. The other
students will jump in place (asteroid belt moving in space) while waiting on their
teammate to return from the sun. The next student in line will go to the sun and play
continues until all planets are placed in order from the sun. The teacher will check to see
if students have all 9 planets in the correct order. If not the teacher should tell the team
how many planets they have incorrect. Students must then take the incorrect planets back
to the sun and return them in the correct order in the Frisbee, one planet at a time. Once
all teams have their planets in the correct order the Teacher calls out “Orbit” and the
students jog (gallop, skip, hop, jump, slide) around the play area one time and return to
their team area. The game can be played again. Time the students to see how long it
takes to complete the task the first time and challenge them to go faster the next time the
game is played.
Variations:
 Change the planets to numbers for number order.
 Name the teams: Place, Value, Odd, Even.
 Students could practice skip counting.
Review Questions:
Skill focus: What did your heart do in the aerobic game? Did it beat faster or
slower?
Academic focus: Name the planets in order starting with the one closest to the
sun.
