GRADUATE RECITAL / THESIS CHECKLIST
The following has been devised to give you a clear idea of the process of presenting a recital
according to the procedures of the Department of Music at Binghamton University. If you
have further questions after reading this form, please see the Director of Graduate Studies for
further clarification.
PROCEDURE
1.
2.
□ Schedule a tentative recital date with the Concert Manager, Marnie Wrighter (FA161).
□ Obtain a Thesis Proposal Form (the Music Dept. website or in the graduate filing
cabinet located in the mail/copy room (FA160)); complete this form (typed) and submit
it for approval to your advisor and two (2) other faculty members selected by you (in
consultation with your advisor). They must sign the form before the process detailed
below can proceed.
3.
□
Submit the completed Thesis Proposal Form to the Director of Graduate Studies in
accordance with the deadline dates below (these dates are also published in the
Department of Music Graduate Handbook); it will then be reviewed by the entire
Graduate Committee.
September 15: for recital dates in the sixth through the last week of the fall semester
December 1: for recital dates in the first through the fifth week of the following spring semester
February 1:
for recital dates in the sixth through the last week of the spring semester
May 1:
for recital dates in the first through the fifth week of the following fall semester
Proposals to meet ensemble requirements for pianists and to meet opera role requirements
must be submitted at least four weeks before the performance date.
If a specified deadline is not met, the Director of Graduate Studies will not accept the proposal
and other ensemble or role performances will have to be arranged for, or the recital will have
to be rescheduled.
4.
□
Once approval has been secured (the Director of Graduate Studies will send you
notification in writing), please inform Marnie Wrighter (FA161) so that the recital date is
firmly set in the departmental concert calendar.
Following this: a) schedule practice times and your dress rehearsal in Casadesus with Marnie
b) complete the “Student Recital Reservation Form”
c) see René Neville, Assistant to the Chair (FA163), to pay your recital fee.
René will also register you for your thesis (Course MUS599) .
5.
□
6.
□
Make sure your advisor and faculty committee are clearly aware of the date on which
you have scheduled your recital, and subsequently remind them one week prior to the
event.
On the week of your recital, verify that your instructor has obtained a thesis approval
form from the graduate filing cabinet (FA160) prior to your performance. Following
your recital, this form must be signed by the various faculty who comprise your
“committee,” and returned, along with a copy of the program, to the Graduate Director
following your recital.
