Department Meeting 9-19-12

1. Approve minutes – Shannon moved; Katy seconded; no discussion or changes; carried
unanimously
2. Announcements
a. Surcharge – 165 credits – for transfer students – remember to tell them
b. Expertise – University publication c. Jabber – can be used both on campus and off. Can make phone calls through here
and message members.
3. Summer Classes – based on seniority classes need to be picked
a. See list
4. ABA Certificate (Shannon & Tia)
a. Draft for an ABA certificate
b. Due date is 11/13
c. Tia knows about BCBA coursework – need 15 credits
d. ABA certificate of 15 credits would allow us to show people are interested in it
and this suggest 2 new courses
e. Have started the proposal
f. Did a four year plan
g. This is a draft
h. Included 640 as a beginning course
i. Have to consult with school psych
j. Please review and feedback by 9/26
k. Tia will send to everyone with her feedback
5. Student Teaching Readiness & Advising Reminders (Nomsa)
a. Updating plans well in advance – our schedule from the student teaching office
has changed
b. Early Childhood (809) is excluded from this procedure – Simone is doing the
interview for these students
c. Let advisees know, student teaching with an extra course is an exception – this is
not easy. In general they are not allowed to take one or two courses along with
680 ./ 789 / 793 – these are the only classes allowed in one semester.
d. With TPA this will tighten this up and not allow them to take other classes with
student teaching
e. Student teaching should be the LAST semester
f. Amy moves that we require all student teachers that they complete all coursework
prior to student teaching except for 470, 480/680, 489/789/793
i. Simone seconded
ii. Carried unanimously
g. Need C or better in courses, cannot have incomplete or F in major to be eligible
for student teaching
h. TPA will have different requirements
i. Will need benchmarks
ii. Seeing certain characteristics
i. No student teaching in summer if the grad student doesn’t hold a prior license
i. 9 week summer student teaching is not enough
6. Pre-requisites and advising on course sequence
a. Three students this semester taking both assessment classes at one time – not
good for the students
b. Both courses are meant to build off each other – 426 is first and 462 is second
c. Characteristics class (325) is necessary for 360
7. CI Proposed Program Change (Amy)
a. Rework the elementary ed program
b. Earlier admittance to prof ed so 1st semester sophomore year they are in prof ed
c. Learning communities as part of this or advising cohort to carry through program
d. Shortened list of recommended minors – science, math, speced, ESL, and other
high needs areas
i. New minor – collaboration with speced and ESL that is a diversity –
differentiation minor
ii. Impact on us will be we will lose some speced minors
iii. Didn’t add a second speced course required (currently only have to take
205)
iv. Almost every semester they will have a field component and restructuring
v. This could mean we have to look at 385
vi. Humanities block and students will pick 2 of 3 music, visual literacy,
dance
vii. Want ten credit lumped into one semester but that doesn’t work for us
viii. Once up and running, this will help with projections of students in classes
ix. Get any comments to Amy ASAP
8. Reading Licensure Test - table for next meeting
9. Flip cams / videotaping students – table for next meeting
10. Lesson plan template – TPA Format (Kelly) – start thinking about this – TPA will guide
us in this but we need to start considering this is that we need to have some consistency
a. We will establish a committee to examine this issue
b. Send questions to Rowand or Kelly
