ENGLISH 2307/76278: CREATIVE WRITING I
TTh 11:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m. FAC 315
Spring 2012
DR. SHARON KLANDER
Office: FAC 206 713-718-6626/713-718-6671 (English Dept.) Hours : By appointment
sharon.klander@hccs.edu
Suggested Texts: (1) The Triggering Town, Richard Hugo; (2) Poetry Handbook, Mary Oliver; and
Making Shapely Fiction, Jerome Stern
Required Work: Grades will be based (1) 40%on regular participation and peer critique in
workshops; and (2) 60% on a portfolio of work completed during the semester, which will
include, but will not be limited to, 5 poems and 1short story per student.
Student Learning Outcomes:
(1) Understand literary tropes and points of craft; (2) Apply terms to specific examples and
written exercises; (3) Analyze representative works of published writers; (4) Analyze and evaluate
other students’ works; (5) Write creative works in a variety of genres.
SPECIAL NOTE: All electronic devices (laptops, cellphones, etc.) must be turned off
completely (not merely muted) BEFORE you enter the classroom, and they are to remain off
for the duration of every class session. This is non-negotiable.
Attendance will be taken. HCC policy allows for students to be administratively dropped from
a course if they are absent six hours' worth of class time (four class sessions--there are no such
things as excused absences--either you're present or not). Arriving to class 15 minutes or more
late is very disruptive; any third and following late arrivals will count as absences and will
be calculated into the six hours of class time missed.
EGLS—Evaluation for Greater Learning Student Survey System:
At Houston Community College, professors believe that thoughtful student feedback is
necessary to improve teaching and learning. During a designated time, you will be asked to
answer a short online survey of research-based questions related to your instruction. The
anonymous results of the survey will be made available to your professors and division chairs
for continual improvement of instruction. Look for the survey as part of the Houston
Community College System online near the end of the term. The student evaluation deadline
for this term is Tuesday, May 1st.
ADA ACCOMMODATION STATEMENT:
Any student with a documented disability (e.g., physical, learning, psychiatric, vision, hearing,
etc.) who needs to arrange reasonable accommodations must contact the Disability Services
Office at the respective college at the beginning of each semester. Faculty is authorized to
provide only the accommodations requested by the Disability Support Services Office.
For questions, contact Donna Price at 713-718-5165 or the Disability Counselor at your college.

Required Work: Under the direction of the instructor in workshop and in individual conferences,
students will work on manuscripts of either poetry or prose that should be, by the end of the
semester, at least 25 pages long. In addition, students will write a short (5 pages typed) scholarly
analysis of their own work as an introduction to the manuscript. Final grade will be based: (1)
20% on attendance and participation in scholarly critique; and (2) 80% on the poetry or fiction
manuscript.
Student Learning Outcomes:
(1) Develop an advanced understanding of the inter-relatedness of literary tropes; (2) Apply that
advanced understanding in a variety of written assignments; (3) Analyze the effects of these
alternatives in published works; (4) Evaluate the usefulness and implications of these applications
in original peer writing; and (5) Create an original manuscript that demonstrates mastery and
understanding of one’s own work and that of others.
SPECIAL NOTE: All electronic devices (laptops, cellphones, etc.) must be turned off
completely (not merely muted) BEFORE you enter the classroom, and they are to remain off
