Welcome to the first in a series of updates about the USDA-funded Woody
Biomass Harvesting & Utilization Project that is taking place in the
Superior National Forest this summer.
You are receiving this email because at some point in the last few
months you indicated an interest in staying informed about the status
of this project. If you are not interested in receiving any more
updates, please email kmarshall@iatp.org. Otherwise, you can expect to
get an email about this project once every two weeks during the summer
and early fall.
News & Info This Week:
1) Woody Biomass Project Web Page
2) Harvests Beginning Late July
3) Woody Biomass Harvesting Workshop and Equipment Demonstration
4) Documenting the Project
1) Woody Biomass Project Web Page
The Community Forestry Resource Center (forestrycenter.org) is hosting
a web page where you can find the most current information about the
Woody Biomass Project—including harvest schedules, photos of field
activity, and written project updates as they become available. This
page can be found at http://www.forestrycenter.org/biomassproject.cfm .
If you are involved in the project and would like to have something
added to the site or if you have any questions about the content,
contact Katie Marshall at 612-870-3407 or kmarshall@iatp.org
2) Harvests Beginning Late July
The first harvests conducted as part of this project are scheduled to
begin Wednesday, July 26th along the Caribou Trail in the Gunflint
District of the Superior National Forest. Loggers from Forest
Management Systems Cooperative will start harvesting on test sites to
get a feel for the equipment and techniques.
3) Woody Biomass Harvesting Workshop and Equipment Demonstration
A workshop for loggers, natural resource professionals and others
interested in the operation of woody biomass harvesting equipment is
being held in Grand Marais, MN on August 7th. Both classroom
presentations and field demonstrations will be a part of this program.
For more information see

4) Documenting the Project
The Community Forestry Resource Center has contracted with Chris Perry,
a photographer and filmmaker based in Chisholm, MN, to produce a video
about the Woody Biomass Project. Chris will be conducting interviews
and filming harvest activities over the summer in order to produce a
10-15 minute video that can then be used to share the process and
results of this project with others.
Thanks for reading and for your interest in the Woody Biomass Project.
Feel free to contact us with questions at any time.
Cheers,
Katie
