M.A. in English: Rhetoric and the Teaching of Writing
For this 36-unit plan, you take:
 5 graduate Rhetoric and Writing courses (15 units) from the following: Eng 501,
Eng 503, Eng 511, Eng 519, Eng 520, Eng 521, Eng 570, Eng 610, and Eng 631.
 ENG 685
 6 elective courses (18 units), chosen with your advisor’s approval. A minimum of
24 hours of coursework must be from the NAU English Department.
(Please note that you can substitute Eng 699 for Eng 685. No more than 6 units of
ENG 699 may be applied to your degree. If you are interested in writing a thesis, you
should consult with your advisor early in your plan. Be aware that you may end up
taking more than the 6 units of thesis credit you can count toward your degree because
you must enroll for ENG 699 each term while you are working on your thesis.)

NAU’s M.A. in English: Rhetoric and the Teaching of Writing Emphasis focuses on 3
learning outcomes for students. When you graduate from the program, you will be able
to:
 Synthesize and analyze relevant research in rhetoric, composition, and the
teaching of writing, including work on visual literacy.
 Apply skills in rhetorical analysis to designing and composing clear, correct, and
stylistically effective documents, in written or digital environments.
 Demonstrate awareness of the ethical, professional, and cultural issues that face
educators and writers.
Justification for proposal. Please indicate how past assessments of student learning
prompted proposal.
The M.A. in English: Rhetoric and the Teaching of Writing is committed to providing
outstanding graduate education focused on issues and problems that matter in rhetoric
and the teaching of writing. The program focuses on providing quality instruction for
students who are interested in language, literacy, and learning in contemporary society.
The recently deleted program in Literacy, Technology, and Professional Writing, even
though it served the student population of current and future teachers, did not allow
students to concentrate in the area of rhetoric and the teaching of writing. The new plan
allows students to follow a clearly articulated plan that allows for structure within a
flexible framework. The title change also puts the emphasis in English: Rhetoric and the
Teaching of Writing in line with other nationally recognized programs in the field of
rhetoric, composition, and the teaching of writing.
