LETTER DESIGNATIONS ON NAU COURSES
NAU currently uses seven designations at the end of course numbers to indicate specific
kinds of courses. These are:
C =
Senior capstone course, approved by the Liberal Studies Committee
H =
Honors course
I =
Two or more courses taken concurrently by a cohort of students.
L =
Laboratory course
R =
Recitation course
W = Junior-level writing requirement course, approved by the Liberal Studies
Committee
X =
Developmental course, with credit counted only toward financial aid but not
academic requirements or GPA calculations.
While these designations can be useful, overusing them has the potential to be confusing
to students.
Therefore, the following restrictions apply to the use of letter designations on
courses at NAU:
1
No course can carry more than two letter designations (such as BA 350IW).
2.
No new designation can be approved unless it is useful throughout the university
rather than just for a subset of the university (such as a single academic unit).
Approved by UCC: January 14, 2003
