Meeting Notes
July 14, 2010
Present: Martha Aaron, Jose Anaya, Maryann Cohan, LauraLee Garinger, Roberto
Pandolfi
A scheduled meeting of the Community Advancement Division Council convened at
2:00 p.m. in the Business Training Center, Room 21.
Review of Minutes from June 4th meeting
Minutes approved as written.
Department Updates
o Small Business Development Center – LauraLee Garinger:
1) Currently working on the SBA renewal for the year 2011 for approximately the
same amount received this year.
2) Working on grant reports for the Chancellor’s Office for projects completed.
3) Working on grant applications for Bank of the West and Wal-Mart.
4) Star attended FDIC training for financial literacy. Hope to incorporate
information into other SBDC programs in order to obtain more grant funds.
5) Rebekah Walker is a new advisor. She is replacing Barbara Sweet.
6) Planning mailings to new businesses in the South Bay to let them know about
SBDC services, specifically loan packaging assistance. We will also mail to
existing businesses in Carson to let them know that our services are available
at Carson City Hall on Thursdays.
7) Received the Small Business Development Center Service Excellence and
Innovation Award from the SBA Los Angeles District Office.
o Workplace Learning Resource Center:
Prisons – Roberto Pandolfi:
Terminal Island
1) AutoCad will complete in September. Second option year begins in January.
2) The third part of the 3-part 60-hour Photovoltaic class, Advanced
Photovoltaic, has completed. The Prison Warden will be invited to graduation
ceremony.
3) Parenting programs currently in progress at Terminal Island and LA Metro
Detention Center.
4) Working on 100-hour Solar Voltaic for Supervisors contract. The program will
be web based.
5) Second 5-year option Welding contract has been submitted.
6) A quote has been submitted for an 8-hour course on “How to Start a
Business”.

Pacific Gateway:
1) Provided computer training for 110 individuals under the stimulus paid training
program.
South Bay Center for Counseling (SBCC):
2) Have been awarded $33,600 for training funds.
Maritime Training:
1) A Standards for Training Certification and Watch keeping (STCW) class is
scheduled for July 19th and a Tankerman class is scheduled for August 30thSeptember 3rd.
2) Possibility of providing STCW training for Disney Cruise Line personnel.
Discussion
o State Budget: There is no approved State budget.
o Update of EWD Programs: Until the budget is signed, the program funds will
not be released.
o Director of Contract and Community Education: Decision will be made and
Director will come onboard September 6th.
