meeting be approved as written and R. Harris seconded the motion. The Chair called for a
vote and the motion carried.
CHAIR’S REPORT
Chair Key announced that the two Sign Language/Interpreter Training proposals scheduled
for review at today’s meeting had been pulled from consideration. They will be
resubmitted by the Health Sciences and Athletics Division in the Fall semester.
K. Key then reported that the Academic Senate approved the CCC’s revised bylaws. The
Senate also approved the definition of the Associate in Science degree. The definition for
the Associate in Arts degree was not approved because of concerns some senators had with
the term, human movement. The Senate is sending the definition back to the Associate in
Arts/Associate in Science Degrees Task Force for a revision. The revised definition will
be forwarded to the CCC and the Academic Senate.
VICE PRESIDENT - ACADEMIC AFFAIRS' REPORT
Vice President Hata noted that L. Mukogawa has taken a pro-active position regarding
articulation and commended her for this. However, confusion regarding articulation and
necessary revisions of course outlines has recently surfaced. The Vice President said that
she has directed the academic deans to disregard a recent e-mail message they received
from L. Mukogawa because the message asked for changes to be made to course outlines

in order to facilitate articulation. N. Hata explained that any requests for course outline
revisions must be filtered through the CCC and that she, A. Collette, K. Key, and J. Young
would be meeting with L. Mukogawa to establish a process that incorporates articulation
concerns with curriculum review.
CURRICULUM REVIEW
PROPOSALS REVIEWED BY CCC CHAIR AND VICE PRESIDENT – ACADEMIC
AFFAIRS:
K. Key led the committee through a review of the justifications developed by him and
N. Hata for the grading method change for Education 10, 20, and 30; the catalog
description revision for History 5A; the updated distance education versions for Business
56abcd, Business 57abcd, Philosophy 8, and Real Estate 25A; the number change for
Academic Strategies 60ab; and the inactivation of Art 8 and Art 35B. After a brief
discussion, C. Striepe moved, and R. Harris seconded, that these proposals be approved.
The motion carried.
HEALTH SCIENCES AND ATHLETICS PROPOSAL:
Chair Key informed the division it would have 20 minutes to present its proposal.
K. Townsend introduced P. Kidwell-Udin, instructor of Nursing as well as Child
Development, then distributed an errata sheet for Nursing 118. She explained that the
CCC had originally approved this course as credit, not degree applicable. However, the
Chancellor’s Office determined that the course met the criteria of a credit, degree
applicable course and approved it as such. In order for the outline to be compliant with
Title 5 regulations, the Nursing Department developed critical thinking assignments for
Section V and strengthened the assignment in Section IV. As there were no questions
about these revisions, N. Hata moved that the CCC approve the revised Nursing 118.
V. Rapp seconded the motion, which carried.
FINE ARTS PROPOSALS:
Before review of the proposals began, K. Key told R. Quadhamer he would have 20
minutes to present the division’s proposals. The dean then asked the committee to begin
discussion with Music 58abcd. After a revision to the catalog description was noted,
review continued with Music 58Labcd. R. Quadhamer informed the committee of minor
revisions to the catalog description and to Sections II, III, IV, and VI of the course outline.
It was noted that these revisions were also applicable to Music 61Labcd and 63Labcd.
After a brief discussion of Music 61abcd during which revisions to Sections IV and VI of
the outline were noted, review continued with Music 61Labcd. In addition to the
aforementioned revisions, the committee was provided with the number of arranged hours
required of students per semester. Next, Music 63abcd was discussed and modifications to
Sections IV and VI of the outline were agreed to. After the required number of arranged
hours per semester for Music 63Labcd was clarified, revisions to Sections II, III, IV, and
VI were noted. R. Quadhamer concluded the division’s presentation with the proposal for
Music 79abcd. During the discussion, the CCC was informed that the Music faculty had
determined that the recommended preparation was inappropriate and that an enrollment
limitation needed to be established. After R. Quadhamer notified the committee of the unit
value for this course, N. Hata remarked that in many of the music ensemble courses, the
CCC MINUTES 05/06/03

hours per week exceeded the unit value of the course. R. Quadhamer said this practice was
common in the field of music and that the unit value paralleled course offerings at other
colleges. V. Rapp then moved that the CCC approve, as revised, Music 58abcd, 58Labcd,
61abcd, 61Labcd, 63abcd, 63Labcd, and 79abcd. R. Harris seconded the motion, which
carried. J. Young moved, and C. Somin seconded, that the conditions of enrollment be
approved. The motion carried.
BEHAVIORAL AND SOCIAL SCIENCES PROPOSALS:
G. Miranda introduced S. Dowden, the division’s incoming CCC representative and
K. Key introduced S. Oda-Omori, the Counseling Division’s new representative.
G. Miranda and J. Young then began the review of the proposed new Child Development
courses. The committee was told that these courses were designed to meet the
requirements of the State’s newly developed School Age Child permit and that they would
replace Child Development 15 in the curriculum. During the discussion of Child
Development 45, several revisions to the new course proposal form that better reflected the
purpose of the course were noted. The catalog description was also revised as were
Sections II, III, IV, and V of the course outline. Next, the CCC reviewed Child
Development 46. Again, revisions were noted to the proposal form, the catalog
description, and Sections II, III, IV, and V of the outline. S. Baxter, course proposer,
explained to the committee that to meet the requirements of the new permit these courses
were designed to provide an in-depth study of material now presented through a broad
overview in Child Development 15. J. Young informed the CCC that once these courses
were part of the curriculum, Child Development 15 would be inactivated. R. Harris then
moved that Child Development 45 and 46 be approved as revised. C. Somin seconded the
motion, which carried. J. Young moved, and C. Somin seconded, that the conditions of
enrollment be approved. The motion carried. A. Collette told those present that because
these were stand-alone courses, they would be forwarded to the Chancellor’s Office for
approval.
MATHEMATICAL SCIENCES PROPOSAL:
D. Goldberg, dean of the division, introduced himself and R. Taylor, Computer Science
faculty member, to the committee. He then distributed an errata sheet for Computer
Science 3 and informed the committee that the proposed revisions were necessitated by
California State University, Long Beach’s decision that it would not articulate this course
because important components were missing from the course outline. The El Camino
College Computer Science faculty confirmed that these components are taught; they
inadvertently were not captured in the outline. D. Goldberg then led the committee
through revisions to the catalog description and Sections II, III, IV, and VI of the course
outline. S. Fasteau then expressed concern that the course objectives were not written in
behaviorally measurable terms. R. Taylor stated that the terminology used was discipline
specific. S. Fasteau said he understood that; however, he thought the CCC had an
obligation to ensure that course objectives were to be written in behaviorally measurable
terms as well as to reflect critical thinking if appropriate. The committee agreed with
S. Fasteau then helped R. Taylor revise the objectives. As discussion concluded, R. Harris
moved, and L. Beckett-Lemus seconded, that the CCC approve Computer Science 3 as
revised. The motion carried.

MAJOR/CERTIFICATE PROPOSAL FORMS
The CCC continued its review, begun at the March 11, 2003 meeting, of the revised form,
Proposal for New Major or Revision to Existing Major, and the accompanying guidelines.
During the discussion, it was agreed that information on how to correctly complete the
form would be included in the guidelines and that a statement would be added to the form
directing faculty developing or revising a major to refer to the guidelines. K. Key
reminded division representatives that they had an obligation to review proposals for
accuracy and completeness prior to submission to the Curriculum Office. D. LaCoe stated
that the committee needed to move forward with the revised forms as the existing ones
continue to confuse faculty and support staff. He then moved that the CCC approve the
form and guidelines as revised. V. Rapp seconded the motion then stated that the form and
guidelines for a certificate should be included in the motion as they paralleled those
developed for the major. D. LaCoe agreed to amend the motion to include the certificate
form and its guidelines. N. Hata thanked the subcommittee for work well done then Chair
Key called for a vote. The motion carried.
At 4:30 p.m., N. Hata moved, and R. Harris seconded, that the meeting be adjourned. The
motion carried.
