Poetry Project

Task: Your team will select one project and complete the components.

Choice 1: "Popularizing Poe"

Task: In order to modernize "Annabel Lee," your team will use the 6 Traits of Writing to create a new version of the classic poem in the form of a one-act play. Your team will be graded on both the written and performance element. Pre-AP will include an example and page for each role to find evidence of his/her assigned trait. Pre-AP will also write an alternate ending to the poem or create the “unedited version,” adding details of “secretly cut” footage.

Your team will assign the following parts:

______Idea King/Queen: You will lead the brainstorming as your group creates a clear, focused message in your script; you will use details and quotes and also maintain attention. You will also serve as the director of the performance part.

_____Organization Owner: You will check for transitions and the overall flow of the script.

______Voice Victor: You add personality to the script and performance. You help to develop the script to ensure that it has FLAVOR and is engaging. Make sure the characters have

PERSONALITY.

______Sentence Fluency Sensation: You verify that your sentences have flow and rhythm. For example, you might add alliteration, assonance, rhyme, meter, and other techniques.

______Conventions Caretaker: As your group works together, you will take notes and write the script nice and neat. Be sure to edit and proofread the script for grammar, spelling, capitalization, and other usage errors.

_____Awesome Artist: You are responsible for creating a backdrop for the play.

*All students will participate in creating the script. Everyone, except the Idea King/Queen should play a character in the play.

Choice 2: “Highwayman Karaoke”

Task: For this project, you will create a soundtrack list for “The Highwayman” to reflect the characterization, plot, and setting of the poem. You will be graded on both the written and presentation element.

Pre-AP will create ten songs and find exposition, rising action, climax, imagery, metaphor, simile, and other literary elements.

The following information must be included in your presentation, perhaps on poster paper. You may also sing.

Choose a song that represents each of the following elements:

Art Product: Each group member is responsible for making a drawing, painting, collage or other visual to illustrate one of the five elements above (make sure that at least one person is responsible for every element).

_____Idea King/Queen: You are responsible for providing strong supporting details that “show” what each element looks like. Use sensory details to paint a picture of each element.

_____Organization Owner: You are responsible for providing evidence and accurate page numbers to back up the song selection and images for each component. Also, make sure group members are on task!.

_____Dazzling DJ: You are responsible for compiling school-appropriate songs that reflect each element.

_____Conventions Caretaker: You are responsible for editing for spelling, grammar, punctuation, and capitalization.

_____Voice Victor: You are the voice of the presentation. It is your job to plan how you will present each element of the project. Be creative!

_____Awesome Artist: You are responsible for designing a CD cover to represent the soundtrack and list the songs.

Choice 3: Sam McGee Scrapbook

Task: Imagine that you are Sam Mc Gee. Create a 6 Traits team scrapbook to document your life and journey in the Yukon.

Your scrapbook must include the following items:

A picture and 3 facts about the Northern Lights with sources cited.

Two quotes from the poem to show plot, setting, climax, etc. Cite your source.

Two quotes from the poem to show figurative language (simile, metaphor, etc.) Cite your source.

 A picture of Sam’s friend, Cap with 2 quotes to show character. Cite your source.

Photos and 3 facts about Sam’s dogs (huskies) with sources cited.

Three diary accounts of 5-7 sentences each to narrate the journey.

Your team will assign the following parts:

______Idea King/Queen: You will be the researcher. You are responsible for effectively summarizing/paraphrasing your research and providing the citation information.

_____Organization Owner: You will be responsible for organizing the scrapbook and ensuring that the citation format is correct. You should also check the diary accounts to make sure each one is organized in a logical sequence and that transitions are present.

______Voice Victor: Your job is to find the quotes in the poem and provide page numbers. You are also responsible for planning the presentation for the scrapbook. You should also make sure Sam’s personality shines through on the diary accounts.

______Sentence Fluency Sensation: Your job is to work with the Conventions Caretaker to write the diary accounts.

You are responsible for editing for Sentence Fluency.

______Conventions Caretaker: Your job is to work with the Sentence Fluency Sensation to write the diary accounts.

You are responsible for editing for Conventions.

_____Awesome Artist: It is your job to design the front cover, find the photos and provide other necessary embellishments/decorations/ illustrations to complement the book. Work with the Organization Owner to determine what might be needed.
