1. Definition of Classification by Division

Classification is the process of arranging persons, places, objects or ideas into groups or categories based on certain characteristics that separate them from other groups.

Activity 1 – arrange the following words into meaningful categories. Think, this word is a type of ________.

Then make a chart with the name of the categories on top.

Apple friend room

Houston pencil love orange

Boy computer friendship girl

2. Principle of classification

Once you have categories, make sure that all the elements inside fit into the same organizing principle. For example, a dog belongs to the family of canines. However, there are many species of canines grouped according to certain features (organizing principle for each genus.

Activity 2 – go to Google.com, write dog classification; read the different types (genus); understand what makes each of them different. Look at the classification provided in the next page. Since the Genus Canis has many examples, we will choose that one as our example. What is the principle of differentiation within Genus Canis?

1.Genus Canis (dogs, jackals, and wolves)

Species Canis adustus (side-striped jackal)

Species Canis aureus (golden jackal)

Species Canis latrans (coyote)

Species Canis lupus (gray wolf)

Subspecies Canis lupus dingo

(dingo)

Subspecies Canis lupus familiaris

(dog)

Species Canis mesomelas (blackbacked jackal)

Species Canis rufus (red wolf)

Species Canis simensis (Simian jackal)

Activity 3 – Make a diagram

Go to the ruler on top of your Microsoft Word file. Click on diagram and choose the first one.

To add boxes click on the top box “Click to add text” and add seven boxes for the species and click on the bottom boxes to add 2 subspecies.

Click on each box to add the text. Write the classification principle in each of them. As you may have noticed, the principle is based on their fur color and design.
