Basic Course Goals:
Studying cost accounting is one of the best business investments a student can make. Why?
Because success in any organization -from the smallest corner store to the largest multinational
corporation- requires the use of cost accounting concepts and practices. Cost accounting
provides key data to managers for planning and controlling, as well as costing products, services
and customers.
The central focus of this course is how cost accounting helps managers make better decisions.
Cost accountants are increasingly becoming integral members of decision-making teams instead
of just data providers. This course will also prepare students for the rewards and challenges
facing them in the professional cost accounting world both today and tomorrow.
Required Textbook:
Principles of Cost Accounting. 17th. Edition.

Educational Credit for the CPA Exam: The Texas State Board of Public Accountancy (Board)
requires that you have completed a baccalaureate or higher degree from a Board recognized
institution of higher education to study at a Board recognized Texas community college to
complete the educational requirements to qualify for the CPA Exam. Houston Community
College is recognized as a qualifying Texas community college. This means that you have to
have graduated from a recognized, four-year college BEFORE the first day of this class if you
want this class to fulfill the Board's education requirements to sit for the CPA Exam.
The Texas State Board of Public Accountancy (TSBPA) awarded Houston Community College
the designation to offer "Qualifying Educational Credits for the CPA Examination."
Students with Special Needs:
Any student with a documented disability (e.g. physical, learning, psychiatric, vision, hearing, etc.)
who needs to arrange reasonable accommodations must contact the appropriate Disability
Support Service (DSS) Counselor at the beginning of each semester. Faculty is authorized to
provide only the accommodations requested by the Disability Support Service Office.
Students who are requesting special testing accommodations must first contact the appropriate
DSS Counselor for assistance. Please contact the Distance Education Counselors, in order to be
referred to the appropriate DSS Counselor.
Students who require testing accommodations need to schedule an appointment for testing to
ensure that staff will be available for proctoring and to arrange for any adaptive equipment that
may be required. Students should contact the distance education instructor’s “Instructional
Support Specialist” (ISS) the week prior to each of the exams throughout the semester to confirm
that the requested testing accommodations will be met. If you need assistance in determining
your instructor’s ISS, please contact your instructor or the Distance Education Counselor for
assistance.
Evaluation and Requirements:
Students are expected to read all assigned chapters, complete and submit all required projects or
assignments on time, carefully review the orientation guidelines and read notes posted in the
website on a regular basis.
Accounting is best learned through doing. Therefore there will always be assignments to be
prepared at home. This will require a considerable commitment of time and effort from you.
Typically, the successful student in college can count on 9 hours of studying every week to
master the content of the chapters and completing the assignments.
Students are responsible for the "learning objectives" at the beginning of each chapter.
Accounting is a subject that cannot be mastered passively. The concepts and ideas could be
compared to building blocks; each serves as a foundation for the new ones. It is extremely
important that each student be actively involved in the learning process. This requires intensive
studying of each chapter, reviewing the study guide and continuous application of the ideas to all
assignments.
Your final grade for this course will be based on how well you do in meeting the evaluation
requirements and applying the grading scale listed below:

Student Getting Started Guide for CengageNOW
ADVICE, TIPS & BEST PRACTICES for STUDENTS using
CENGAGENOW updated 12-07-11
Technical Support for CengageNOW is provided by the publisher, Cengage Learning. After
you read and follow the tips on this handout, don’t hesitate to phone Technical Support if you
still have problems or questions about the software/system. Their hours are Monday-Thursday
8:30 AM to 9:00 PM, Friday 8:30 AM to 6:00 800-990-8211 . They also have online chat available
24/7 after you create a ticket at:
ttp://support.cengage.com/magellan/ClassLandingPage.aspx?optyId=1-1SMGT3S

Google Chrome or Firefox are the recommended Internet Browsers to use when
using CengageNOW.







Pay attention to the System Check page when you login, as it will tell you whether
or not you have pop-up blockers running or other settings on your computer that
may interfere with the operation of CengageNOW.
Computer Updates: Sometimes you will need to download updates to be able to see all
of the content in CengageNOW. If you are unable to see something in CengageNOW,
that you know you should be able to see, try going to the following websites and
downloading the updates they have for Flash, Java, and Shockwave.
o Shockwave Download site: http://get.adobe.com/shockwave
o Flash Download site: http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer
o Java Download site: http://www.java.com
If you are running security software on your computer (anti-virus, anti-spyware,
script-blocking software, etc), remember to either turn it off (while you are working
within CengageNOW) or allow CengageNOW as a trusted site. There are many
different types of security software, so you will want to refer to your program’s
help files to find out how to temporarily turn off the software, or allow trusted sites.
If you are using CengageNOW in a computer lab environment (instead of on your
own personal computer), be sure to clear the browser’s cache and cookies prior to
logging into CengageNOW. This ensures that any previous users’ activity will not
interfere with your usage of CengageNOW. You may also want to consider restarting the computer as well to make sure that there aren’t any programs running
in the background.
DO NOT HAVE OTHER APPLICATIONS OPEN. (This includes email,
Facebook, games, IM, My Documents, etc.) Like many other websites, the
sessions on CengageNOW stay active and feed information from our servers
while you are working. Sometimes, other applications (especially “streaming”
applications) can interrupt the session.
DO NOT have more than a single instance of CengageNOW open at any time. This
means that you should only open a single window of CengageNOW. If you are in
CengageNOW, and you try to open another CengageNOW window, then the
program will not grade your work properly, and you will not receive the proper
scores.
When you pay your bills online, or purchase something at an online retail site, you usually
complete your task in a few minutes. However, with CengageNOW you may be in a
particular assignment/problem for an hour.
o Make sure you click the “save” button often; especially on long homework
assignments/problems.
o
Special Note: If your instructor also administers quizzes/tests in
CengageNOW, they usually do not enable the “Save” function in test
mode. Most Instructors want you to complete a quiz/test in one session.
o
CengageNOW also has a time-out feature. If you are working on a
particularly long problem, make sure to click the “Check My Work” link
every 10-20 minutes to keep you session active and prevent it from timing
out.

DO NOT use your browser’s “Back” arrow button or Click ‘Refresh’.
This can corrupt assignments (and scoring) you are taking, or have just
completed. Just like when entering credit card information on a retail website, using
your browser’s “Back” button results in unsaved work being lost.
o You may navigate to various questions within your assignment by clicking on the
empty circle in the vertical column under “Questions”.
o You can navigate to other areas of CengageNOW, such as the Gradebook, by
clicking on the horizontal row of tan “file tabs”.

If you normally use a wireless internet connection, and are having problems
getting kicked out of the system, it may be because your wireless signal is not
consistent enough to handle the large amount of data being sent in CengageNOW.
Try connecting to a physical internet connection with an Ethernet cable to ensure
constant signal strength.

DO NOT click your Browser’s red “X” close button.
You must
log out of your assignment before you close your browser.
o When you are done with an assignment, click the “Save” button (again),
and then click the “Submit Assignment for Grading” button in order to
submit the finished assignment to your Instructor.
 After you “Submit”, your assignment score and feedback will be
immediately available to you within your “Gradebook” section.
(Assuming your Instructor allowed for immediate posting.)
o If you do not want to submit the assignment for grading, you should click
the “Exit” button. Do not click the red X button on your browser; if you do,
your work will be automatically and immediately submitted to your
Instructor. CengageNOW does this to preserve any work you could lose
because of an interruption in your internet connection or in a power
outage.

What if my assignment is interrupted?
o CengageNOW requires student’s computers to keep “cookies” which
contain important information. If a student loses connectivity and needs to
log back into CengageNOW to continue an assignment, the system will
treat the new login attempt as a second session, and it will close out the
first one and submit the assignment (if this cookie isn’t present on the
computer). This is an intended security feature for CengageNOW.
o If your assignment is interrupted by an internet outage or computer crash,
restore connection, and log in to your account, and then resume the
assignment. You should do this as soon as possible after you lose your
connection. Your assignment should be available/open for up to 2 hours
after you lose your connection.
 If you get a message box that warns you that you are “already
active” or “logged in”, you should probably phone Technical
Support. If you get this message, and you continue, you will lose
the work/results from your interrupted session and the system will
give precedence to your new session. This would also make the
system “submit” the work/results of your interrupted session. (If
you only had 1 attempt available, you wouldn’t be able to take it
again.)

Using Smart Entry for CengageNOW: Cengage NOW uses a “Smart Entry”
system. Smart Entry allows you, the user, to enter anything you would like
in the data fields. As you start typing, a range of possible options will come
up. The predictive text shows you what options the system might be
looking for.
o
o
o
If you stray from the expected entries (for example, misspelling a word), the word
will turn red. This means your entry is unacceptable. If you try to enter data that
is red, it will “blank out” when you tab from the field.
o

Note that a range of possible options has been programmed into CengageNOW.
Just because your entry doesn’t turn red, doesn’t necessarily mean it is correct!
Entering Numbers in CengageNOW: CengageNOW is programmed to
accept “equivalent numbers” as answers. In the example below, you can
see that CengageNOW would accept “$11”, “11”, or “11.00”.
o
$11 was accepted as an entry.
o
11 was accepted as an entry.
o
11.00 was accepted as an entry.
o
CengageNOW will usually provide
directions if special formatting is
needed.
