COURSE DESCRIPTIONS:
Surveys fashion as it relates to art
and design. Line, color, balance and
proportion are studied providing
guidelines to understanding fashion
and how it communicates personal
image to society.

GENERAL COURSE OBJECTIVES:
To develop the students overall view of fashion; defining fashion as a lifestyle
reflected by society, history, art, culture, and environment.

STUDENT LEARNER OUTCOMES:
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
a) Explain the importance of appearance in first impressions.
b) Define basic fashion terminology.
c) Describe and identify a variety of garment details and styles.
d) Analyze clothing styles that reflect various personality types.
e) Identify and describe the art elements and principles of design as applied to
clothing.
f) Identify individual figure types and how they can be enhanced through the use
and manipulation of the elements and principles of design found in garments.
g) Examine the optical effects of design elements on appearance. Describe how
optical illusion can be used to achieve pre-determined objectives in dress.
h) Identify personal coloring and select hues that are flattering to the individual.
i) Explain the role ethnic and historic costumes play in fashion.
