This unit standard is for people working in the viticulture
industry. People credited with this unit standard are able to
identify and implement manual canopy management
requirements, and supervise a team.

moderation option:
A centrally established and directed national moderation
system has been set up by the Primary Industry Training
Organisation.

for this unit standard. This unit standard is based on
the unit of competency FDFWGGCMMA, Co-ordinate
manual canopy management activities.

Workplace procedures refers to verbal or written
instructions to staff on procedures for the worksite and
equipment.

Legislation relevant to this unit standard includes but is
not limited to the Health and Safety in Employment Act
1992 and its subsequent amendments.

Equipment may include hydraulic/pneumatic pruners,
secateurs, knives, saws, maintenance tools,
mechanical wire lifters, bare hands. It may also include
team support equipment such as toilet facilities, first-aid
box, spare equipment, etc.

Team members may include people from a range of
social, cultural and ethnic backgrounds and physical
and mental abilities. Size of team may vary.

Canopy management systems will vary with enterprise
requirements but may include vertical shoot positioning
(VSP), wide T, Scott Henry, single wire, Geneva double
curtain (GDC), Sylvoz.

Information systems may be paper or electronic based.

Prepare for canopy management activities.

1.1
Canopy management requirements are identified in terms of site and crop
characteristics.
1.2
Vine vigour and growth is assessed.
Range:
unwanted growth may include suckers, water shoots, congested
shoots, excess bunches.
1.3
Appropriate canopy management techniques are selected in terms of site and
crop characteristics.
1.4
Equipment is confirmed as available and ready for use.
Range:
1.5
safety standards and pre-start requirements are met, equipment is
operational.
Canopy management activities are divided up among the team and instruction
is given in accordance with the extent of the activity.

Implement canopy management requirements.
performance criteria
2.1
Canopy management activities are carried out according to vine vigour/growth
and supervisor’s instructions, and without damage to vines, equipment or
property structures.
Range:
may include leaf removal, shoot removal, lifting or lowering foliage
wires, positioning shoots, trimming shoots, bunch thinning.
2.2
Canopy management activities are monitored to confirm performance is
maintained within specifications.
2.3
Out-of-specification performance is identified, rectified and/or reported.
2.4
Problems and anomalies are identified, corrected and/or reported.
Range:
may include signs of common pests and diseases such as mildew,
eutypa, phomopsis, boring insects, crown gall, diseased
wood/berries. It may also include signs of trellis and/or irrigation
disrepair or problems, machinery breakdown, team performance.

Complete canopy management operations.

3.1
Workers are debriefed as appropriate.
Range:
equipment is cleaned, maintained and stored; vine trimmings are
collected and disposed of.

Record and/or store information in a retrievable format.

4.1
Workplace information is recorded and/or stored according to workplace
procedures.

Range:
may include standard operating procedures, specifications,
production schedules/instructions, work notes, Material Safety
Data Sheets, manufacturers’ instructions, verbal direction from
manager, supervisor or senior operator.
