Definitions
On-farm procedures – the verbal or written instructions to staff on procedures for pig
health, welfare, and management.
Pork production unit – collective term for several pork production sections. For
example, a farrowing section, a grower section, and a dry sow section together make
up a pork production unit.
Elements and performance criteria
Element 1
Carry out routine pork production unit hygiene procedures.
Performance criteria
1.1
Pig pens are cleaned removing all dung and urine without wetting sleeping and
feeding areas in accordance with on-farm procedures.
1.2
Fouled sleeping and feeding areas are cleaned using driest method available in
accordance with on-farm procedures.
1.3
Raceways and yards are cleaned removing all dung, urine, and organic matter
in accordance with on-farm procedures.
1.4
Waste system is maintained in accordance with on-farm procedures.
1.5
Dead pigs and offal are disposed of in accordance with on-farm procedures.
1.6
Pest control procedures are carried out in accordance with on-farm procedures.

may include but is not limited to – flies, rodents.
Element 2
Clean the facility using pressure washing.
Performance criteria
2.1
Facility is prepared for pressure washing by ensuring portable fittings are
dismantled and electrical fittings are waterproofed.
2.2
All facility surfaces are soaked for a period prior to pressure washing in
accordance with on-farm procedures.
2.3
Pressure washer is prepared and operated safely in accordance with on-farm
procedures and manufacturer’s instructions.
2.4
Facility is pressure washed removing all dung, urine, and organic matter from all
surfaces, and causing no damage to surfaces and fittings, in accordance with
on-farm procedures.

Element 3
Sanitise the pork production unit facility.
Range

Performance criteria
3.1
Facility to be sanitised is checked to ensure it has been pressure washed and
all portable fittings replaced.
3.2
Facility is sanitised in accordance with on-farm procedures.
3.3
Safety procedures for handling sanitising materials are carried out in
accordance with on-farm procedures and legislative requirements.
Element 4
Operate the pork production unit waste management system under supervision.
Performance criteria
4.1
Waste is removed in accordance with on-farm procedures.
4.2
Cleaning procedures and hygiene practices are carried out in accordance with
on-farm procedures.
4.3
Waste management equipment is serviced and maintained in accordance with
manufacturer's instructions and on-farm procedures.
4.4
Volume of waste and equipment is checked to maintain effective operation of
the system in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions.
4.5
Waste management system is operated according to system design in
accordance with local authority requirements, on-farm procedures, and
manufacturer’s instructions.

Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated
authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against
unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register
credits from assessment against unit standards.
Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards
must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.
