Purpose
People credited with this unit standard are able to demonstrate knowledge of
the Rules relating to: trainers, jockeys and apprentices; races and race
meetings; the totalisator; stakes, programmes, entries and withdrawing,
weights, penalties and allowances, weighing, starting; offences, breaches
and general provision; and running the race.

Either the Rules of Racing or the Rules of Harness Racing may be used in the
assessment of this unit standard.
Elements and performance criteria
Element 1
Demonstrate knowledge of the Rules relating to trainers, jockeys, and apprentices.
Performance criteria
1.1
Requirements of trainers are described in accordance with the Rules.
1.2
Requirements of apprentice jockeys or junior drivers, and jockeys or drivers are
described in accordance with the Rules.
Element 2
Demonstrate knowledge of the Rules relating to races and race meetings.
Performance criteria
2.1
Rules relating to races and race meetings are described in accordance with the
Rules.
2.2
Rules relating to the control of race meetings are described in accordance with
the Rules.
Element 3
Demonstrate knowledge of the Rules relating to the totalisator.
Performance criteria
3.1
Rules relating to the totalisator are described in accordance with the Rules.
Element 4
Demonstrate knowledge of the Rules relating to stakes, programmes, entries and
withdrawing, weights, penalties and allowances, weighing, starting.
Performance criteria
4.1
Race stakes are described in accordance with the Rules.
4.2
Contents of programmes are described in accordance with the Rules.
4.3
Approval and advertising of programmes are described in accordance with the

Element 6
Demonstrate knowledge of the Rules relating to running the race.
Performance criteria
6.1
Requirements of horses and riders or drivers before the start of a race and at
the start of a race are described in accordance with the Rules.
6.2
Rules relating to horses and riders or drivers while running the race are
described in accordance with the Rules.
6.3
Rules relating to dead-heats and walk overs are described in accordance with
the Rules.

Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated
authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against
unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.

Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register
credits from assessment against unit standards.
Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards
must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.
Accreditation requirements and an outline of the moderation system that applies to this
standard are outlined in the Accreditation and Moderation Action Plan (AMAP). The
AMAP also includes useful information about special requirements for organisations
wishing to develop education and training programmes, such as minimum qualifications for
tutors and assessors, and special resource requirements.
