Control cross directional up and down warp over extended periods for fibreboard manufacture

4 Credits 20 Level

Purpose People credited with this unit standard are able to: produce board without excessive cross directional (CD) warp over extended periods at high production speeds; correct CD warp in accordance with workplace practices; and take joint proactive and/or joint corrective measures with other corrugator crew in accordance with workplace practices.

Explanatory notes

1 All workplace practices must meet any applicable and recognised codes of practice, and documented workplace health, safety, and environmental procedures for personal, product, workplace health, safety, and environmental matters, and the obligations required under current law including the Health and Safety in Employment

Act 1992, Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act 1996, Resource

Management Act 1991, Privacy Act 1993 and their subsequent amendments.

2 Workplace practices refer to the documented procedures for the machine and/or workplace.

3

‘Cross Directional’ is abbreviated to ‘CD’ where it occurs in outcomes and evidence requirements.

4 The terms ‘normal warp’ and ‘reverse warp’ are excluded from this unit standard to avoid ambiguity.

5 The process for defining and calculating warp percentages for the purposes of assessment is as follows: when a warped board is laid on a level surface so as to form a shallow arch, the maximum vertical deviation from the horizontal is expressed as a percentage of the board dimension that forms the arch. Warp is assessed at take-off, and thus exclud es ‘post warp’.

6

‘Extended periods’ are defined as periods of at least one hour's duration, and including several paper changes.

7 ‘Corrective measures available’ where listed at evidence requirement 1.2 and referred to elsewhere may be taken in any combination or sequence which is in accordance with workplace practices and equipment specifications and configuration.

8 The sequence of actions available listed at evidence requirement 1.2 is that recommended by the Industry as reflecting ‘best practice’ for correcting CD warp, but remains subject to workplace practices and equipment specifications and configuration.

9 Where referred to, ‘excess misalignment’ is defined as: (a) in single face web, where the misalignment between medium and liner paper exceeds 5mm at operator side;

(b) in double faced board where the misalignment between the edge of the single face web and the edge of the bottom liner paper exceeds 5mm at operator side; (c) in twin cushion where all three edges (of the two single face webs and the bottom liner paper) fail to align within a 5mm spread at operator side.

10 Where referred to, ‘plant listed maximum speed’ is that determined by each workplace as appropriate for specific production conditions taking into account paper grades, flutes, run length, and chop length.

Outcomes and evidence requirements

Outcome 1

Produce board without excessive CD warp over extended periods at high production speeds.

Evidence requirements

1.1 Awareness of forthcoming paper changes is demonstrated.

Range check production documentation, communicate with other corrugator crew members.

Proactive corrective measures available to reduce the risk of CD warp are described and/or taken in accordance with workplace practices in anticipation of paper grade and/or paper width changes.

Range adjustments to – single facer adhesive application levels, wraps at bridge single face pre-heater, wraps at double backer liner preheater; hot plates temperature, platen section pressure; use of – double backer water sprays, main belt steam showers; adjustments to – wraps at single facer liner pre-heater, wraps at single facer medium pre-conditioner, amount of loops on bridge; use of – single facer medium steam showers, single facer water sprays.

1.3 The effects of the corrective actions available in 1.2 are explained in terms of workplace practices and equipment configurations.

1.4 Board is produced at not less than 80% of plant listed maximum speeds for extended periods, other than when changing.

1.5 Board is produced to meet the requirements of the job without excess misalignment.

Outcome 2

Correct CD warp in accordance with workplace practices.

Evidence requirements

2.1 Production speed is maintained at not less than 80% of plant listed maximum.

2.2 CD warp warning is immediately responded to in accordance with workplace practices.

2.3 CD warp is reduced within one minute of receipt of the first warning that CD

Warp exists. Actions available are as defined at 1.2.

2.4 CD warp is reduced to 2% or less within three minutes of receipt of the first warning that CD warp exists. Actions available are as defined at 1.2.

2.5 Following the reduction of CD warp to 2% or less, no CD warp exceeding 2% is experienced before the next change of paper grade or type or width.

2.6 Procedures to be followed in the event of failure to reduce CD warp to 2% or less within three minutes of a warning are explained in terms of workplace practices.

Take joint proactive and/or joint corrective measures with other corrugator crew in accordance with workplace practices.

Evidence requirements

3.1 Communication with other crew is made ensuing there are no delays to production.

3.2

3.3 Cooperation with other crew is demonstrated in jointly reducing CD warp within the required time periods.
