This unit standard is for foremen, supervisors, planners, and
managers working in cargo operations.
People credited with this unit standard are able to demonstrate
knowledge of a company’s procedures for hazard management
in a port environment, and carry out hazard management
procedures in a port environment.

Explanatory notes
1
Compliance requirements include but are not limited to – Health and Safety in
Employment Act 1992, General Harbour (Safe Working Load) Regulations 1982,
General Harbour (Ship, Cargo, and Dock Safety) Regulations 1968.

guidelines, or authority requirements or conditions affecting this unit standard will

Definitions
Company policies and procedures refers to relevant workplace documents which are
current and accessible to candidates, trainers, and assessors, and which comply with
legal requirements.
Documents may include but are not limited to rules, guidelines, forms, and
worksheets.
Hazards refers to situations and conditions presenting actual or potential risk
including but not limited to – risk of harm to persons and/or environment, risk of
damage to property and/or process, exposure to financial loss.

Evidence requirements
2.1
Hazards are investigated and evaluated in terms of risk in accordance with
company policies and procedures.

Hazard controls are determined in accordance with company policies and
procedures and Sections 8 to 10 of the Health and Safety in Employment Act.
2.3
A task analysis for hazards is carried out in accordance with company policies
and procedures.

A planned general safety inspection is carried out in accordance with company
policies and procedures.
2.5
A pre-use inspection is carried out in accordance with company policies and
procedures.
