Job Purpose
To support the provision of professional and business focused legal advice
to ensure that the legal service offered internally to CIPD colleagues is
consistent, relevant and commercial.
Key accountabilities
1.
Contracts
To support the review of contracts to be entered into by the CIPD including key
strategic projects, supplier agreements, memorandums of understanding, nondisclosure agreements, partnership agreements with overseas companies,
agreements with Centres (domestic and international) for providing CIPD
certificates and qualifications, venue agreements, terms and conditions for website
use, entering into competitions, terms of business and contracts for tenders.
2.
Legal Advice
To support the provision of advice on contentious and non-contentious issues to
managers as and when required helping to enable decision-making and formulate
strategy. To provide briefing papers and updates to managers and to be involved
in project teams set up for specific issues.
3.
Supplier / Customer Disputes
To assist with the management of any supplier / customer disputes.
To liaise and negotiate with suppliers and customers to resolve customer disputes
and draft all necessary documentation and correspondence.
4.
Training and internal awareness
Where appropriate, to support the training of internal clients in legal issues that
frequently affect them and to establish clear procedures with regard to internal
legal approval.
5.
Administrative
To file and maintain a database of CIPD’s contracts and to participate in other
projects and tasks as identified by the Head of Legal such as preparation of legal
fact sheets, guides and FAQs and research and use of social media to contribute to
the legal awareness of internal clients and smooth operation of the team.
Nature and scope
The Legal & Governance department is very busy with a large number of high profile activities
which must be completed to deadlines and where changing priorities need to be effectively
managed. Much of the work is legal in nature, with a focus on commercial law. Some is also
confidential or commercially sensitive and requires diplomacy.
The role entails liaising with people at all levels and helping to explain legal terms in a
digestible format.

Knowledge, qualifications and experience
LLB or LLM or ILEX qualified or equivalent, with experience of reviewing, preparing and
drafting legal documents. A keen interest in company legal and governance matters, and
charity legislation would be useful.
The job holder will be highly organised and analytical with a flexible approach and the ability
to meet deadlines and to use initiative.
The job holder should also be computer literate with the ability to use spreadsheets and
databases.
