PROGRAM NARRATIVE SUMMARY
PROGRAM ADDITIONS
Berkeley City College
Working with City College of San Francisco with grant funding, the college developed an associate
degree and certificate program for Community Health Workers. There is a growing demand in this field.
Another grant-funded project in conjunction with Rubicon, created two entry-level certificates for at risk
students in Business Office Technology and Social Service Paraprofessional.
PROGRAM CHANGES
Berkeley City College
Changes were made to the Social Services Paraprofessional associated degree and certificate to place
a greater emphasis on vocational courses to better prepare students for employment.
Laney College
The Media Communications department revised the core curriculum and course patterns to reflect
current industry demands. The Business Education department added courses to the Business
Information Systems program to make students more competitive for the job market.

Justification:
After a detailed review, this program is being revised. The primary change is to focus less on transfer courses and more on
vocational courses. Two courses were revised; several new courses have been developed. The revised program should not
only draw more students, but will also better prepare them for employment.

Justification: Previous core requirements were based on an older academic model that no longer suits the vocational
needs of the majority of MEDIA students. Students interested in a Certificate program are for the most part working
adults looking to upgrade skills, change vocations or interested in very specific fields. They require achieving this in a
more streamlined fashion. For those seeking transfer to a 4-year institution, we have kept the articulated courses, plus
recommend our many other active MEDIA courses to round out requirements for the AA degree. We have also made
the Portfolio class and the internship requirements, both being important for entry into the job market. (Effective Spring

emphasize the collaboration between a communitybased site and the student artists. It will fit
comfortably with existing offerings such as Drawing

offered a similar experimental course in Fall 2003
and Fall 2004 with an average enrollment of 13; this
course was on our committee agenda before Laney
institutionalized their course at the November CIPD.

occur with Laney before it is institutionalized and
formally added to our art curriculum.

The workforce of the local woodworking industry is
undergoing a sea change. As older journeymen
retire in increasing numbers, those potential
employees who show up at the shop door are often
recently arrived Hispanics, who, while coming from
a cultural tradition of fine woodworking, lack the
English language and mathematical skills to
succeed in a specialized technological
environment. Retention and further skills upgrade
are an issue for both employers and employees.
Often prospective Hispanic employees are forced to
take menial daytime jobs, simply to support their
families, and are unavailable for traditional daytime
education.
This is the first course in a two-semester program
which will be offered in conjunction with a
specialized, vocational ESL class designed to
address the specific needs of the woodworking
trades. Classes will be offered in the evenings.
Students would be required to take technical and
ESL classes concurrently. Our focus would be the
basic skills, both technical and communication,
which will qualify students for stable, well-paid
employment in the woodworking trades. Surveys of
local employers indicate great interest in this type of
program, both in finding new workers and improving
the prospect of advancement for those Hispanic
employees currently working for them. There is also
an interest in a daytime internship program, to
provide students with an income in related work,
while completing the evening program.
*Per CIPD, change this to a cohort course to be
marketed this way in the Schedule of Classes. Do a
validation study over the next two years to
determine whether or not to establish this as a
corequisite.

Recent one-unit introductory courses such as this,
which were prerequisite to fee-based field courses,
went well in fall 2005 (Western Australia) and
spring 2007 (North Woods). Additionally, moredistant environmental studies field courses
(Peruvian Amazon, Alaska, Vancouver Island, New

generally had stronger enrollments than some of
the closer-to-home ones. Some of the students in
this program have expressed an interest in a field

attracted if the program offerings are diversified.
Once a course is present in the catalog or course

well. This course will be the required prerequisite to

This course is an overview of the use of plantbased systems to solve a host of environmental
problems. Air, soil, water, ecosystems and even
human bodies are burdened with pollution in every
industrialized city on the planet. Plants and other
biological systems have been discovered and
developed to regenerate nature’s ability to purify
environments. A regenerative arts program at
Merritt College would empower students to engage
in a solutions-oriented approach to a host of local
environmental problems that is economically
accessible. This program would not only create
meaningful job skills for students, but it would put
Merritt’s Horticulture department on the leading

Many students, especially those pursuing the
design track in Landscape Horticulture, have been
asking for a course for some time covering the
history of gardens and gardening in order to
deepen their understanding of how garden design
and practice have evolved over time. Since
gardens are deliberate human creations, the class
will of necessity be a history of the theory and
practice of garden design, but it will also be a
history of horticulture, of the cultivation of plants
(both useful and ornamental), and of the artistic,
social, philosophical and literary contexts of gardenmaking through the ages.

Preparation for success for a pre-licensure registered

nursing; includes ATI testing of essential skills and critical
thinking to identify areas of strengths and weaknesses
and an on-line component. 4930.14
M07
38
There is a shortage of registered nurses in the
country and state. While all of the students
admitted into the program meet the minimum
qualifications for admission, we have had over 50%
of the class fail or drop for academic deficiencies.
Most of the attrition occurs in the first semester of
the program. We believe our attrition is due to the
fact that our students are not prepared for a fulltime academic program. Students admitted to our
program scored in the lowest 2-15% in ATI testing
of essential skills (reading, math. etc.) and critical
thinking (an extremely reliable predictor of success
in nursing programs) when compared to other ADN
Programs and all programs nationally. Therefore,
we believe that providing resources for success
before admission will help reduce our high attrition.
The course will include lecture, discussion, and online instruction. In addition to the required
classroom attendance, students will have the
opportunity to work in small groups where they can
focus on specific skills such as reading, test-taking,
study skills, and math where remediation is
needed.
