Purpose
People credited with this unit standard are able to: prepare a
substance abuse awareness programme specifically for
rangatahi within the context of oranga; compile a directory of
local key support people and organisations who provide
support services for rangatahi; identify the addictive ingredients
within substances that are commonly abused by rangatahi;
implement a substance abuse awareness programme for
rangatahi; and develop a rangatahi survey to evaluate the
substance abuse awareness programme.

Explanatory notes
1
The context of inquiries is limited to local rohe and takiwā. Where local rohe are also
occupied by Māori with other iwi or hapū affiliations, the tangata whenua or mana
whenua view takes precedence. However, these alternative perspectives should be
encouraged in order to enrich and enhance understanding of key oranga concepts.

Descriptions, explanations, and observable actions can be presented in a number of
ways that may include but are not limited to – kōrero, titiro, whakarongo, tuhituhi,
whakaari, waiata, and haka presentations.

Recommendations from rangatahi focus group are collated to form basis of
plan.
1.3
Programme is written in language common to rangatahi.
1.4
Programme identifies strategies for discouraging substance abuse.

Kaiako approval for programme is secured.
Outcome 2
Compile a directory of local key support people and organisations who provide support
services for rangatahi.

Local substance abuse support services are listed.

Evidence requirements
4.1
The venue for the awareness programme is acceptable to rangatahi.
4.2
The awareness programme material is presented in the language most
commonly used and understood by rangatahi.
4.3
The awareness programme is cognisant of the learning styles of rangatahi.

Develop a rangatahi survey to evaluate the substance abuse awareness programme.
Evidence requirements
5.1
Evaluation questionnaire is written in language commonly used by rangatahi.
5.2
Questionnaire is endorsed by rangatahi focus group on substance abuse.
5.3
Evaluation questionnaire results in improvement to substance abuse
programme.
