Evidence of the elements of this unit standard must be presented across the
following contexts:
cabinetry includes but is not limited to – bunks, lockers, doors, cupboards, drawer
suites, louvres, galleys, stairs, handrails, companionways, internal hatches, fiddles,
tables, chairs, gimballed stove surrounds.
Evidence is required for a drawer suite, plus two fixed items, plus one removable
item, plus one free standing item. Two items are to be completed to a varnish finish.

The following apply to the performance of all elements of this unit standard:
a
All required equipment must be set up, started up, operated, and shut down in
accordance with company procedures.
b
All work practices must meet recognised codes of practice and documented
worksite health and safety procedures (where these exceed code) for personal,
product, and worksite health and safety, and must meet the obligations required
under the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992, and subsequent and
delegated legislation.
c
All work practices must meet recognised codes of practice and documented
worksite environmental procedures (where these exceed code) for personal,
product, and worksite environmental matters, and must meet the obligations
required under the Resource Management Act 1991, and subsequent and
delegated legislation.

Elements and performance criteria
Element 1
Establish job requirements for the construction of interior boat cabinetry.
Performance criteria
1.1
Job specifications are verified in accordance with company procedures.
1.2
Construction requirements are determined from inspection of drawings, plans,
and the actual boat.
Range
construction requirements – compatibility of materials, accessibility
for installation, accommodation with other trades’ requirements for
installation;
drawings – concept designs, working drawings.
Element 2
Prepare for cabinetry construction.
Performance criteria
2.1
Development of sketches and templates enables cabinetry to be constructed to
customer’s requirements for functionality, and to customer’s and company’s
requirements for resource usage.
2.2
Timber, adhesives, and fastenings are selected and ordered to meet job
requirements.
Range
timber requirements – matching, finishing, durability, strength,
weight, lamination, veneering;
job requirements – to include exposure of completed cabinetry to
moisture.

2.3
Construction method is selected to meet accessibility, time, and cost factors.
Range
methods – in situ, prefabrication.
2.4
Selected method enables the completed cabinetry to retain its shape and
function, and maintain the security of stored items, in spite of boat movement.
2.5
Selected method is confirmed with company and/or clients before commencing
construction.
Element 3
Construct cabinetry to specifications.
Range
by prefabrication and by constructing in situ.
Performance criteria
3.1
Tools are selected according to job requirements.
3.2
Completed cabinetry meets job requirements for size, shape, weight, surface
equilibrium, and quality of finish.
3.3
Installation instructions are provided in accordance with company requirements.

authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against
unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register
credits from assessment against unit standards.
Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards
must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.
