Purpose
This is a stranded qualification for people who are involved in racing operations.
The TAB Retail Strand is for people who are employed in a TAB retail outlet carrying out
thoroughbred, harness, and greyhound racing retail duties. These people will have the
skills to operate the TAB retail outlet in a partially supervised role. They will also have
knowledge of thoroughbred, harness, and greyhound racing and racing operations; the
structure and functions of the New Zealand Racing Board; maintaining a safe and secure
environment for people in the hospitality industry; problem gambling in a Race Act
gambling establishment; workplace health and safety; and time and stress management.
The elective allows people to select additional skills applicable to their own work situation,
or personal and professional development, such as TAB retail administration, marketing
and interpersonal communications.
The Raceday Control Strand is for people who coordinate on course betting systems,
using a betting system administration terminal. These people will have the skills to
coordinate an on-course betting system in a partially supervised role; apply problem
solving techniques; manage interpersonal conflict; collaborate in a group or team; and
listen to gain information. They will also have knowledge of thoroughbred, harness, and
greyhound racing and racing operations; the structure and functions of the New Zealand
Racing Board; maintaining a safe and secure environment for people in the hospitality
industry; problem gambling in a Race Act gambling establishment; workplace health and
safety; and time and stress management.
On completion of either strand people can progress to generic management qualifications
such as the National Certificate in Business (Small Business Management) [Ref: 0172], or
the National Certificate in Business (First Line Management) (Level 4) [Ref: 0649].

Requirements for Award of Qualification
Award of NZQF National Qualifications
Credit gained for a standard may be used only once to meet the requirements of this qualification.
Unit standards and achievement standards that are equivalent in outcome are mutually exclusive for the
purpose of award. The table of mutually exclusive standards is provided on the New Zealand Qualifications
Authority (NZQA) website: http://www.nzqa.govt.nz/qualifications-standards/standards/standards-exclusionlist/.
Reviewed standards that continue to recognise the same overall outcome are registered as new versions
and retain their identification number (ID). Any version of a standard with the same ID may be used to meet
qualification requirements that list the ID and/or that specify the past or current classification of the standard.
