Title

Purpose
People credited with this unit standard are able to produce an
open mould from a plug or pattern against a product
specification by preparing for production, producing the mould
to specification, and carrying out specified safety precautions.

Prerequisite: Unit 3160, Produce a laminated polyester resin
item to a product specification for composites; or Unit 3161,
Produce an epoxy resin item to a product specification for
composites; or Unit 3162, Produce a vinylester resin item to a
product specification for composites; or Unit 3163, Produce a
bisphenol resin item to a product specification for composites;
or Unit 3164, Produce a phenolic resin item to a product
specification for composites, or demonstrate equivalent
knowledge and skills.

Definitions
Equipment refers to applicators, dispensers, measuring devices, cutters and cleaning
utensils.
Process specification refers to the documented order and method of applying the
materials to manufacture the item (time, materials, temperature, application rates).
Product specification refers to the documented requirements of the manufactured
item.
Worksite procedures refer to the documented procedures for the machine and
worksite.

All worksite procedures must meet recognised codes of practice such as the Code of
Practice for Health and Safety in the Manufacture of Composites Based on Synthetic
Resins (Fibreglass), Composites Association of New Zealand, 1998. This code, and
other relevant codes of practice, are available from the Composites Association of
New Zealand, PO Box 75 345, Manurewa, Manukau 2243, or at
http://www.osh.dol.govt.nz/order/catalogue/composites.shtml. They include
obligations required under current legislation. All worksite procedures must also
meet documented worksite safety procedures (where these exceed the code) for
personal, product and worksite safety.

The mould produced for this unit standard must include external and internal angles,
and concave and convex surfaces.

Outcome 1
Prepare for production of an open mould from a plug or pattern.
Evidence requirements
1.1
Plan of mould production is verified in accordance with product specification.
1.2
Plug or pattern is prepared in accordance with process specification.
1.3
Materials are prepared in accordance with product specification.
1.4
Equipment is set up in accordance with process specification.

Produce open mould from a plug or pattern.
Evidence requirements
2.1
Process and product specifications are met in accordance with worksite
procedures.
