This unit standard is for people with or developing specialist
expertise to improve the literacy and numeracy skills of adult
learners in Aotearoa New Zealand.
People credited with this unit standard are able to: describe the
history of the development of adult literacy and numeracy
initiatives for adult learners in Aotearoa New Zealand; the
history and development of Māori literacy and numeracy to the
present; the reasons for, and impact of, low adult literacy and
numeracy; and identify and describe specialist services and
resources that support adult literacy and numeracy educators
and learners.

For the purposes of this unit standard, adult literacy and numeracy education
includes design, delivery, assessment, and evaluation.

Definitions
For the purposes of this unit standard, colonisation refers to the dominance of one
group over another. Its effects in Aotearoa New Zealand endure from before 1840
into contemporary society. These effects impact on current political, social, economic
and educational structures, which therefore impact on literacy and numeracy, and
their provision.
Educators refer to those people delivering adult literacy and numeracy education.
Learners refer to those people receiving adult literacy and numeracy education.
