Educator Effectiveness Teacher Advisory Cabinet

Call for Applicants

Purpose & Background

The Center for Educator Effectiveness at the

Massachusetts Department of Elementary and

Secondary Education (ESE) oversees educator preparation, evaluation, recognition, and other educator quality initiatives. As we work to support districts, schools, and teachers in educator effectiveness work, we know it is critical to engage school-based educators whose feedback can inform our ongoing work. ESE began convening two statewide principal cabinets in 2011 and a teacher cabinet in the winter of 2014. We are now seeking new members for the 2015-16 Teacher Advisory

Cabinet (TAC). Members of the cabinet will be asked to share insight (for example, successes and challenges they experience), suggestions, and feedback that will help refine current policies and inform the development of new policies and initiatives at the state level .

Who Can Apply?

ESE invites teachers who can provide thoughtful, nuanced, solutions-oriented comments and feedback. (Specialists and coaches who spend a part of the day or week providing support to students are also eligible to apply.)

Ideal candidates will have an interest in or capacity for learning about state-level policy beyond their schools. We are seeking a group of teachers who will together represent diverse backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives.

We plan to convene the Teacher Advisory Cabinet six times during the 2015-2016 school year. During these meetings, members will be asked to weigh in on timely topics such as: teacher leadership, particularly the role that teachers can play as peer observers or peer evaluators; what it means to give and receive high quality feedback; and how to best use rubrics as part of evaluation. Additionally, we reserve some time during meetings to discuss new initiatives that arise and to help teachers think about how to bring the knowledge they gain at meetings back to their schools and districts.
