New Business – Celine Lang and Wendy Helmstetter made a presentation on
the Florida Tech Digital Library.
History of Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETD)
The Digital Library program is really an Institutional Electronic Publishing
Program, the “archive of the future.” Submissions to the library would be in digital
format. Layered on the document would be meta (cataloging) data. Dr. Norine
Noonan, former VP for research and Graduate Programs, was former POC for
the ETD program. The Library staff are preparing themselves to be in a state of
readiness for launching this project. They envision a digital library that would
also contain all faculty scholarly published material. Access would be through
searchable databases.
State of the ETD Program
The program has grown into the National Digital Library of Theses and
Dissertations (NDL of TD). There are 144 universities participating, with 50 – 60
having active projects. Virginia Tech is still one of the leaders
http://etd.vt.edu/background/.
Library at Florida Tech
Hardware, software and labor resources are required for implementation. Issues
to be addressed include: must be built to international standards, searchable
through local on-line catalogs and varied search engines, and shelf life of
electronic media. There are 22 Doctoral programs and 58 Master’s programs at
Florida Tech. The budget for 1997-98 to get in the game was $65,000.
Next Meeting: The next ACITC meeting is scheduled for April 21, in the School
of Aero.

The Applied Computing Center – The Center continues to provide video and audio
project support. Recently staff produced six video and audio clips for a College of
Engineering presentation to a group of thirty student recruitment counselors from across
the country. Original background music was composed to ensure there were no
copyright violations.
Staff recently provided support to the Biology department by producing video and
multimedia CDs to use with grant applications. They also produced nine sets of CDs
with digital media for a $124K grant application by Dr. Shenker.
Resources have been increased with the addition of 4 MAC G3s and two scanners. The
equipment has been set up to enhance digital production services for students. Two
student assistants are working on projects for the Adobe Design Achievement Awards
competition. They are entering the video and still composition categories.
