Title of Lesson – The Pilgrims (for a junior/senior level class)
Previous Assignment (if any) – Read the prologue section on the second pilgrim. Be

questions, what you understand the text to say, and anything you want to remember to
share with the class.
Objective(s) (what do you want them to learn) – 1) Students will analyze their reading
styles from practicing silent and out loud reading. 2) Students will be able to compare
the styles of the Middle English time period with their own.
Materials – 1) Texts 2)Material for taking/making notes
Activities (in class) – Silent reading of the pilgrim’s tale. (35 minutes) Discuss the
difficulty of the language, why it is difficult, and the role that plays in the literature. Was
the writing difficult to read? Why was it difficult? What characteristics of ME literature
make the reading difficult? Was it more difficult to read silently or aloud? Why? From
which method did you comprehend more? (10 minutes) Again fill in a KWL on the new
material (to be done as they read and during discussion) (5 minutes to finish up).
Evaluation (how do you know they learned it) – At the end each day the students will
hand in the KWL and it will be a written documentation of What they Know, What they
Want to know, and What they Learned. Information about the material will be included
on a final test at the end of the unit. The class discussions should also reveal their
thoughts on the reading and their ability to analyze their own reading styles.
Assignment (out of class) – Read the prologue section on the third pilgrim. Be prepared
to discuss the material. Take notes in a journal as you read which includes questions,
what you understand the text to say, and anything you want to remember to share with
the class.
