Seat Belts

By: Linda Sabinash

Buckling your seat belts should not be a law. Have you ever stopped to think about how dumb of a law this is? Our founding fathers are probably rolling in their graves about how our government has taken a turn for the worst and is trying to control our every action, seat belts being one of them. I don’t think it should be a law because it is cutting in on our freedom, some people think that if you wear a seat belt you can drive faster, and the government should limit its role to safety education.

The government has no right to have a law that says we have to buckle our seat belts. It should be up to the person who is in the car to wear the seat belt. If they want to go flying through the windshield and end up dead, it should be their right. I don’t see why the government cares about this or not. It is personal preference and they are cutting in on our rights as an American citizen. I personally don’t wear my seat belt just because

I don’t agree with the law. I guess in a way I am protesting. I have been in a few close calls without having my seat belt on and that has not changed my mind at all. If I see a cop I will quickly pull my seat belt on just so that I don’t have to pay the stupid fine. I think the government should find something better to do than have the police officers worry about who is wearing their seat belt or not.

According to Dr. Bert Loftman, seat belts increase the number of accidents because seat belts and airbags protect car drivers from injury. Therefore, drivers feel less risk and drive more aggressively. This causes more accidents. If the government would leave this issue alone there would be one less law that lets the government have police states. I think this is very true because I know people who think this way. They think they are invincible with that seat belt and airbag. If we didn’t have the mandatory law

there wouldn’t be such a big deal made about how you are so safe with the seat belt on.

People would realize that they help save your life, not protect you from death.

According to former US Senator, Gordon Humphrey, he says that there will be no mandatory seat belt law in New Hampshire, if he is governor. He thinks that the government is interfering with people’s private lives. He also says that people over the age of eighteen are old enough to take the responsibility into to their own hands about their safety. The government should get out of the cars and limit their role to safety education. He is totally against forcing people to use seat belts. If you are eighteen years or older you are old enough to make your own decisions and wearing seat belt should be one of them.

In conclusion, I think that seat belts are a very good thing and wearing them is fine. I’m not against wearing seat belts; it should be your choice to wear one. I do however; think that people under the age of eighteen should have to wear a seat belt.

People younger than this are not old enough to take the responsibility to decide what is best for them.
