Lesson Plans
10th Week – October 27 – October 31
Please note: I make my lesson plans extensive and with high expectations. If the
students are struggling and things do not go as quickly as planned, I scale back. You
may see activities that I planned for last week have been moved to the current week to
accommodate the pace of my learners.
Major Objectives:
Writing &
Writing Mechanics




Students will use their knowledge of simple and compound
sentences to write 5 simple sentences and 5 compound
sentences using their SPEC vocabulary words.
Given the SLAM writing organizers and classroom discussion
of the plot of “Thank You, Ma’m,” students will write a 5- 7
sentence paragraph for the following prompt: Did Mrs. Luella
Bates Washington Jones make a permanent difference in
Roger’s life?
Students will read dialogue in “Thank You, Ma’m” and will
determine rules of punctuation. After they have determined
how to use punctuation correctly, they will be able to
punctuate basic dialogue with 70% accuracy.
Students will review the use of commas in sentences with
items in a series.
Vocabulary

Students are working with Greek and Latin root words,
prefixes, and suffixes. This week, we will finish the root word
spec (to look, to see). Quiz over these words will be FRIDAY,
OCTOBER 31. Vocabulary words using this root word are:
 circumspect (adj)
careful to LOOK at all possibilities before acting;
cautious; aware of consequences
 inspect (v)
to LOOK carefully in search of flaws
 introspection (n)
the act of LOOKING into one’s own thoughts and feelings

Students will are working on an activity called, “Out with the
Old and In with the New.” They will “toss” the following
overused words and will use new vocabulary to replace them:

Students will take a quick pre-test of 34 commonly used words

to ensure that they are ready to move more quickly on the “Out
with the Old and In with the New” vocabulary exercise.

Students will use prior knowledge to place commas correctly
in sentences.
