Goals
The Committee reviewed accomplishments from last year and discussed goals for
this year.
Program Assessment Reports for the 2010-11 year are due 10/15. CLO reporting
on the PARs should include speech (SpAC) and computation. Kate has
communicated the deadline multiple times. Kate passed around a copy of the
“2010 Feedback on 2009 Program Assessment Reports – A Summary” to remind
us where we need improvement.
Write up goals for next
meeting approval
Computation was assessed primarily by a multiple choice test administered by
John Falls and various faculty. Results are posted on the Student Success page.

The Committee discussed who is responsible for PARs – a cooperative effort of
faculty, course coordinators, program directors and department chairs.
Cooperation/ownership has been a problem, particularly outside of HS area. The
new Course Assessment Report (CAR) and the improved PAR may help in
collecting the information needed at the course level to inform the PAR.
CLOs
The Committee needs programs to pilot the PAR and CAR this coming year. Last
spring Sharon Perry had indicated ADN might do it. I might be easiest to pick a
specific learning outcome and use the reports to get the data. Lynn Damberger
had indicated that she thought the CAR would be helpful. Brad Hays has a lot of
data that doesn’t always get into PARs.
The Committee discussed the general education goals that are in the College
Catalog – the concern that the general education faculty could be held accountable
for them, therefore have to assess them.

It has replaced the previous Culture & Community CLO (that the
Committee was not able to define in a measurable way) on the Student
Success page, but it has not been replaced in course syllabi – a problem.

Critical Thinking (CT) CLO: The rubric, new two years ago, has not been used
very much. (It is on the CLO Assessment Schedule for 2012-13.) The Committee
discussed critical thinking and assessment. John and Deb noted that the Patrick
Henry CC group will be coming in to lead a workshop on collaborative learning in Plan rubric use with ENG
December. That is a prerequisite for the critical thinking workshop. It is unknown faculty
if the group will be brought back for the critical thinking workshop. Deb Hysell
volunteered to test the CT rubric with ENG 101 courses – to possibly improve
feedback to students beyond writing mechanics.

Computation CLO: This will need to be revised to match the fact that college
level math will be required in all curricula beginning Fall 2012. It is next
scheduled (CLO Assessment Schedule) for 2013-14. The Committee decided last
year that the means of assessment would be through the cumulative final exam
grade in the highest level math course the student takes. This would be best
accomplished if the data could be captured through Black Board or the student
records/transcripts. Faculty will need to report final exam scores starting in 201213. However, we do not expect that IT will help with this project this year due to
other commitments.
