Update Questions
Each Update consists of your answers to five required items or questions. Brief
explanations, in italics, follows each item or question.
#1. Describe the past year's accomplishments and the current status of this
Action Project.
This year, we have had three level one trainings, and one level two training. Of the 26
tutors currently working in the Tutoring Center, nine have achieved level one
certification, seven have achieved level twi certification, and ten are new. After fall
quarter, we will hold the first level three training, and the second level 2 training. Upon
completion of the these trainings, this program will be submitted to the CRLA, Center of
Reading and Learning Association for certification. We have gathered data that
compares the success rate of developmental students that received tutoring with those
that do not. The rate of success is hire for those that seek tutoring, with the exception of
the lowest level developmental Math students. We are exploring options in which we can
better support these students. Also, last school year, we served 26% of the total number
of students that attended North Central State College.
#2. Describe how the institution involved people in work on this Action Project.
Tutors are rewarded by an increase in their pay rate if they achieve tutor certification. All
new tutors attended the training before fall quarter began. Many of the veteran tutors
also attended the level two training sessions. Many of the tutors have facilitated the
development of the training models and have evaluated the usefulness of the trainings to
determine if changes need to be made.
#3. Describe your planned next steps for this Action Project.
I am working on developing the level three modules for the training to be held at the end
of this quarter. Also, I am revamping the first two levels from the feedback I have gotten
from the tutors, the evaluation of the tutors’ strengths and weaknesses, and the
comments of students.
#4. Describe any "effective practice(s)" that resulted from your work on this
Action Project.
We have adopted the Socratic Method of Tutoring. This is the method in which
questioning is used to first assess what previous knowledge the students have, and to
lead them to the answer. The process models to students the thought process that one
must go through to get to an answer, as well as teaching them to think critically. Also,
we have learned and recognize the importance of forming relationships with students.
We work hard to keep the environment comfortable and inviting so students feel
welcomed and are not nervous about seeking help. Finally, often when a students
comes to the center struggling, they may need to review previous knowledge due to a
lacking skill base. Assessment of skills is crucial in determining what support students
need when they seek support.
#5. What challenges, if any, are you still facing in regard to this Action Project?
The development of this program has gone smoothly.
