Analyzing Statistics is

IN THE BAG!

EQ: How can the mean, median, mode, and range be used to describe the shape of the data?

Mastery Objective: Students will be able to use mean, median, mode, and range to describe a set of data, as measured by BCR completion.

Directions:

1.

As a group, read and look at the provided examples of data sets and statements that are in the large plastic bag.

2.

Read the BCR that explains why the statement uses the measure of central tendency to make its claim.

3.

With a partner, take a small baggie.

4.

Examine the cards in the baggie and read the given statement.

5.

With a partner, discuss which measure of central tendency the statement uses to make its claim, and explain how you know.

6.

After discussing each index card, choose 1 and write a BCR that explains which measure of central tendency the claim is based off of.

7.

Independently, write your BCR.

8.

Turn your BCR into the math bin.

If you finish early:

Pull 5 cards from the brown bag.

Record your data on the given sheet.

Find the mean, median, mode, and range of your data. (You may use a calculator.)

If each number only appears once in the data set, there is no mode.

Create a statement that describes your data using one of the measures of central tendency.

Play again!
