Assignment 5
Due: next wed
Part I. Drills -- 1 point each
1) Convert this Norton equivalent to a Thevenin equivalent at a-b ...... and this Thevenin to its Norton equivalent
2) Find just the “Lookback” resistance (turn off sources) from terminals a-b
3) find the Thevenin equivalent (Source Xform or NV for Voc, turn off sources for Rth) at A-B
4) Find the Norton equivalent at a-b, (v=Vth was found in Assignment 4, short terminals and find Isc for Rth)
5) Find the value of RL for maximum power transfer to RL, and the corresponding maximum power that RL can receive.
Part II. Assisted Problem Solving – 2 pts each
6
PLAN
1) Find Thevenin Equivalent at the load
terminals with Ro disconnected.
a. To find Voc, use either Source Xform or
NV/supernode
b. Use “lookback” resistance for Rth (Turn
all sources off)
2) for max power xfer, set Ro = Rth
3) Connect Ro to your Thevenin equivalent
circuit at a-b
4) Use voltage divider to find V_Ro
5) Use P = V_Ro^2/Ro to find Pmax
PLAN
7
1) Find the Thevenin equivalent of the
circuit to the left of Ro
a. Use NV to find center node V, voltage
divider to find Voc
b. Short terminals across 100 ohm
resistor and redo NV, then find Isc, and
thus Rth
2) Draw the thevenin eq with Ro attached.
3) Keeping Ro a variable, find V_Ro using
voltage divider formula
4) set up power formula for Ro and set
equal to 250
5) solve for Ro
Part III. Unassisted Problem Solving – 3 points each
8) (Find i0 with only one source activated at a time, then add together. Same for v0)
