Adjectives:

An adjective is a word that modifies a noun or pronoun.


Adjectives answer the questions:
What kind, How many, How much, Which one or Whose?

Adjectives do not always come before the words they modify. If they come after a linking
verb they are called a predicate adjective. ( The box is empty)


A noun sometimes turns into an adjective when it modifies another noun. (The tax collector is
in town). It depends on where the word is used in the sentence whether it is used as a noun
or as an adjective.

A proper noun, as you recall, is one that names a particular person, place or thing. A proper
adjective is formed from a proper noun. (Spanish dancer)

Compound adjectives are compound words modifying other nouns. (superhuman effort).

Pronouns can also sometimes be adjectives.

Demonstrative pronouns such as this, that, these, and those answer the question “Which
one?”

Possessive pronouns such as my, our, yours, hers, its, and theirs are pronouns that can be
used as adjectives. They answer the question, “Whose?”

Indefinite pronouns such as each, both, all, few, most, and some also can be used as
adjectives.
