COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course introduces the theories and practices of backstage and front-of-house techniques used in
theatrical productions, including basic carpentry, electricity, sound systems, and specialization. This
course may be repeated three times.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
At the completion of the course the student will be able to:
Demonstrate a proficiency of all phases of play production including construction, painting, rigging,
placement, and manipulation of stage scenery, lighting equipment and properties and the stagecraft
terminology.
Define and demonstrate knowledge of scene shop operation, maintenance and safety procedures
regarding the usage of tools and technical equipment, building materials and fastening methods,
blueprint reading, and the overall planning of the technical aspects of a theatrical production.
diagnose unfamiliar situations in technical theatre.
Interpret a ground plan and section view, and explain the use of scale in technical drawing.
Assess the importance of teamwork in carrying out a group project as it relates to technical theatre.
Organize the building of a unit of scenery.
Recognize and reflect proper stage protocol and professional attitude as well as master technical theatre
vocabulary.
