COURSE DESCRIPTION
This is a course in compositional drawing in charcoal from still-life and other subject matter. It is designed for
students with an understanding of composition and design, and continues from ART 174, focusing on drawing
from observation of still life materials. The course also provides an introduction to concepts of abstraction, and
continued use of charcoal and other drawing media on an 18 inch by 24 inch or larger format. Projects in: still
life studies, communication of line and location, construction of planes, contour/cross–contour, and light and
shade.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
At the completion of the course the student will be able to:
1. Demonstrate the use of black and white in value drawings.
2. Distinguish between various drawing media in relation to value.
3. Develop a strategy for critical assessment of 2- dimensional artwork.
4. Demonstrate the use of a brown drawing medium using value.
STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES
Create three drawings in black and white using value.
Create three drawings in three different black and white drawing media using value.
Develop a personal portfolio
Use brown as a color to develop a drawing, using conte, and ink.

Introducing drawing using value to show volume
Introduction to positive/ negative space in developing backgrounds
Development of a personal portfolio
Introducing brown as a color for drawing, suing conte, and ink.
