COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course in black and white still photography is a practical introduction to basic black and white photographic
techniques, including selection and use of a camera, general darkroom procedures, and the making and presentation of
projection prints. Not repeatable.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
At the completion of the course the student will be able to:
Demonstrate the techniques of Camera Work (Lenses, film, exposure, and frame composition).
Quality process film.
Make projection prints of negatives in the darkroom.
Demonstrate presentation methods (mounting and matting).
Demonstrate the fundamentals of design as practiced in photography.
Express themselves with a visual language.

The Camera: a brief history of its development, how and why it works.
Lenses: How they work and their relationship to focal length (depth of field) to the image.
Exposure: Light metering systems, and their relationship to the eye’s way of seeing.
Film: Types and uses; processing for optimum results, chemistry and timing.
METHODS OF INSTRUCTION
Lecture/demonstration of photographic equipment, methods, and materials.
Group Critiques and individual instruction of work in progress.
