SSPBT Viability Review
Process
• Programs continually assess the effectiveness and
efficiency of their services and report their findings
and related resource needs in their Comprehensive
and Annual Program Reviews
• SSPBT members are assigned to read 2-3 Program
Reviews (Not their own). Readers report back to
SSPBT with an initial recommendation for each
service in a program to be Viable or to raise
Questions about the viability of the service
3
Resource Allocation
• The SSPBT makes resource allocation
recommendations to the College Council.
• The term Resource is used in broad terms and
includes:
– Personnel (faculty, classified professionals, administrators)
– Equipment (instructional, non-instructional)
– Facilities
– Professional Growth
– Operating budgets
4
Recommendations
• SSPBT after hearing all reader reports including the
program’s own recommendations and considering
any other information available declares the service
in a program to be:
– Viable and should:
• Grow
• Be enhanced, or
• Be maintain at current level
– Questionable and needs to:
• Change direction
• Reduce, or
• Be discontinued
5
Viable
• “Grow” The program is encouraged to expand its
service to effectively and efficiently serve more
students with its existing resources. SSPBT could
allocate additional resources as needed for the
program to grow.
• “Be enhanced” The program is encouraged to
improve the effectiveness and efficiency of its service
to students with its existing resources. SSPBT could
allocate additional resources as needed for the
program to become more effective and efficient.
6
Viable
• It is understood that the “be maintained”
designation is the default designation and most
services will fall into this category.
• “Be maintained” The program is encouraged to
continue its effective and efficient service to students
with its existing resources. SSPBT could allocate
additional resources as needed for the program to
maintain its level effectiveness and efficiency.
7
Viable
• Before the SSPBT declares a service to be viable
and gives it a grow, enhance, or maintain designation
it will consult/communicate with the IPBT and
FERPBT.
• The SSPBT will not assign a viability designation until
it understands the college-wide implications.
• The default designation for all services in a Student
Services program will be to maintain the service.
