PROTOCOL
I. Hon. Mr. Ben Shneiderman will be welcome by Mr. Rector Magnificus and
authorities at 11.00.
II. The guests will take their seats at 11.30.
III. At 12.00, at the entrance of the retinue, those present will stand up while the
Association University Choir performs the hymn Veni, Creator Spiritus, in the
following order:
1. Doctors in Engineering
2. Doctors of Philosophy
3. Doctors of Science
4. Doctors of Law
5. Medical Doctors
6. Doctors in Economics
7. Doctor of Fine Arts
8. Doctors in Sports Science
9. Board of Directors
10. Presidential Officers
11. The Rector
IV. The Rector will say:
"MEMBERS OF THE COUNCIL, PLEASE BE SEATED AND COVER
YOURSELVES. THE SESSION IS OPEN. THE SECRETARY GENERAL WILL
READ THE RECTORAL DECREE OF THE AWARDING OF THE APPOINTMENT
AS HONORARY DOCTOR FOR THE UNIVERSIDAD DE CASTILLA-LA
MANCHA TO MR. BEN SHNEIDERMAN"
The Secretary General will read the Rectoral Decree.
V. The Rector will say:
"THE SECRETARY GENERAL IS GOING TO PICK UP AND ACCOMPANY THIS
CANDIDATE AND HIS GUARANTORS TO THE FACULTY. "
The Secretary General will leave the auditorium while the Coral Group sing.
At the entrance to the retinue, the Members of the Council and the guests will stand up.
The grantee, clad in gown and hood, preceded by the Secretary General and
accompanied by his guarantors, will approach the place reserved for that purpose and
take a seat.
VI. The Rector will say:
"THE DOCTOR D. MANUEL ORTEGA CANTERO, FULL PROFESSOR OF
COMPUTER LANGUAGES AND SYSTEMS AT THE FACULTY OF COMPUTER
SCIENCE IN CIUDAD REAL, WILL NOW READ THE LAUDATIO.
I CALL ON PROFESSOR DON MANUEL ORTEGA CANTERO.
VII. Don Manuel Ortega Cantero will take the floor and will end the Laudatio saying
"… AND FOR ALL THIS I BEG TO PROCEED TO INVEST HON. Mr. BEN
SHNEIDERMAN THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR HONORIS CAUSA BY THE
UNIVERSITY OF CASTILLA-LA MANCHA".
VIII. The Rector will say:
"THIS IS THE SOLEMN INVESTITURE AS A HONORARY DOCTOR TO HIS
HON. MR BEN SHNEIDERMAN.
The grantee, accompanied by their guarantors, will stand opposite the Rector.
IX. The Rector will say:
"I, THE RECTOR, UNDER THE AUTHORITY I AM VESTED, CONFER THE
TITLE OF DOCTOR HONORIS CAUSA BY THE UNIVERSITY OF CASTILLA-LA
MANCHA.
I IMPOSE ON YOU THE HONORED CEREMONIAL CAP AS A SYMBOL,
VENERATED DISTINCTION OF THE HIGHEST SPANISH ACADEMIC
ORDER. WEAR IT ON YOUR HEAD AS THE CROWN OF YOUR STUDIES AND
ACHIEVEMENTS. " He puts the cap (Academic Biretta) on him.
X. The Rector will continue:
"YOUR GUARANTORS WILL GIVE YOU THE OTHER ATTRIBUTES OF YOUR
HONOR:
FIRST, RECEIVE THE BOOK OF SCIENCE AND WISDOM, WHICH IT IS
NECESSARY TO CULTIVATE AND TRANSMIT WITHOUT REST, IN ORDER
THAT YOU CAN HAVE ALWAYS PRESENT THAT, HOWEVER LARGE YOUR
TALENTS MAY BE, YOU SHOULD ALWAYS SHOW REVERENCE, RESPECT
AND ALL YOUR CONSIDERATION TO YOUR MASTERS, THOSE WHO HAVE
BEEN YOUR PREDECESSORS". Don Francisco José Quiles Flor, Professor of
Computer Languages and Systems, will deliver the Book of Science and Wisdom to the
grantee.
"RECEIVE THE OLD RING, A SYMBOL OF THE MARRIAGE BETWEEN
WISDOM AND YOU, AND as AN EMBLEM OF THE PRIVILEGE TO SIGN AND
SEAL JUDGMENTS, ENQUIRIES AND SENTENCES RELATED TO YOUR
SCIENCE AND PROFESSION” Professor of Computer Architecture and Technology,
Don Pedro Ángel Cuenca Castillo will deliver the Ring.
"FINALLY TAKE THE WHITE GLOVES, AS A SYMBOL OF THE FORCE YOUR
HANDS SHOULD BEAR AND ALSO A SIGN OF YOUR HIGH ORDER”.
Professor of Computer Languages and Systems Don Miguel Ángel Redondo Duque will
deliver the gloves.
XI. Then the Rector will say:
"I INVITE THE NEW HONORARY DOCTOR TO TAKE THE OATH”.
The Secretary General will read the formula of the oath, according to the Constitutions
of the former Universidad de Toledo:
"DO YOU SWEAR FIDELITY TO THIS UNIVERSIDAD DE CASTILLA-LA
MANCHA, SAVE YOUR HONOR AND PROFIT, FOLLOW THE STATUTES
THAT ARE NOW OR OVER TIME, KEEP THE ORDER OF SEATS AND OF THE
ELDERLY WITHOUT PERVERTING IT AND OWN THE RIGHTS OF GRADES
ENTIRELY WITHOUT TRANSFERRING THEM TO ANYONE? "
The doctor will say: "I SWEAR".
XII. The Oath taken, the Rector shall deliver the new Honorary Doctorate Degree
Medal and say:
"PLEASE ACCEPT THE EMBRACE OF PEACE AND BROTHERHOOD OF
THOSE WHO ARE HONORED AND GLAD TO BE YOUR BROTHERS AND
COLLEAGUES.
XIII. After returning to their seats, the Rector will say:
"I CALL ON THE DOCTOR HONORIS CAUSA, HIS EXCELLENCY DON BEN
SHNEIDERMAN.”
The new Doctor Honoris Causa will then read his speech entitled "The New Computing:
Human Values and the Future of Technology".
XIV. After the speech, the Rector will give a speech.
XV. Standing, the Faculty of Doctors and the guests will sing the Academic Hymn,
”Gaudeamus Igitur”.
XVI. The Rector will say:
"THE SESSION IS ADJOURNED"
XVII. Hon. Mr. D. Ben Shneiderman will leave together with the Members of the
Presidential Committee while all assistants will remain standing waiting for the
academic procession to exit the auditorium in the same order of entrance. The choir will
sing during the procession.
