Page 2
1. Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the
university. Attach an organizational chart with positions, ranges, and names for the division
which reflects the position in it as well as those supervised in the department. (This section is
used for advertisement of the position.)
The Director, Community Based Medical Education, reports directly to the Associate Dean for Medical
Education under the Office of Medical Education (OME). The Director is responsible for the Northern
Nevada community-based preceptorship programs within the Practice of Medicine and Introduction to
Patient Care preceptorships and statewide summer programs. Within these programs the Director is
responsible for the overall development, support, and monitoring of the course(s). The Director serves
the University School of Medicine (UNSOM) and the University as a community relations
representative within the community of preceptors and medical centers in Northern Nevada. The
position establishes sustainable relationships between the community and UNSOM and facilitates the
introduction of physicians to the possible roles and responsibilities as a preceptor and other possible
student learning opportunities within the community. The Director works with University and UNSOM
faculty to ensure that overall the partnerships are well balanced, efficient, coherent and responsive to
community partners.
2. List the major responsibilities, including percentage of time devoted to each. Provide
enough detail to enable a person outside the department to understand the job (percentage
first with heading and then bulleted information).
40% - Practice of Medicine (POM) Preceptorships
 Manage and administer clinical preceptorships for all first- and second-year medical students
including providing community-based outreach to recruit, retain and orient all POM preceptors
(community based primary care physician teachers) to the program
 Match all students and preceptors based on criteria acquired from individual meetings,
assessing, providing feedback and grading of assignments; provide conflict resolution for both
students and preceptors, and monitor end-of-semester evaluations
 Sustain partnerships with area hospitals and medical centers by providing support and
required documentation and training of students (i.e., adherence to varied regulations,
standard procedures for facility, Federal regulations, etc.)
 Provide small group facilitation
 Collaborate with other POM Block Directors and faculty to plan, coordinate and implement
curricular blocks
 Participate in and support division-wide courses, programs, research and committees (i.e.
Standardized testing, professionalism, scholarship, medical curriculum)
 Serve on curriculum committee and curricular reform committees
35% - Recruitment, Retention, and Coordination of Clinical Adjunct Faculty
 Coordinate all OME adjunct clinical faculty appointments (approximately 350) for related
courses and UNSOM activities (i.e., electives and Student Outreach Clinic); maintain
documentation processing and manage OME Adjunct Clinical Faulty database
 Supervise and evaluate Classified staff
 Efficiently communicate and work with staff to arrange course support, provide information and
referrals, and resolve complications Initiate and coordinate annual community preceptor
appreciation and recognition events (i.e., Preceptor Recognition Program) for all preceptors
statewide
 Facilitate scheduling and coordination of community/preceptors/student events and activities
 Contribute to UNSOM website and other media opportunities to share successes and
developments in community-based medical education

25% - Summer Programs, Service Learning, and Group Facilitation
 Coordinate statewide summer preceptorship programs for approximately 95% of medical
students which includes surgery, emergency medicine, pediatric specialty and communitybased preceptorships
 Provide community-based outreach to recruit, retain and orient all preceptors and work with
statewide hospitals and medical centers to ensure compliance with community partnership
requirements (i.e., medical center requirements, student authorizations to work, licensures,
immunizations, mutual management of the curricular structure, and student supervision)
 Collaborate with all UNSOM faculty to coordinate clinical research projects for student
involvement
 Provide coordination for scholarly concentration in service learning and for fourth year
electives in Service Learning (320-hour clinical experience)

taught within the week; facilitate small group through several clinical cases which depict ethical
and professional dilemmas
3. Describe the level of freedom to take action and make decisions with or without
supervision and how the results of the work performed impact the department, division and/or
the university as a whole.
Level of Freedom:
The Director has a significant level of responsibility and freedom to ensure that the course goals and
objectives are met, monitoring student and preceptor successes, grading and evaluating students,
and ensuring that the recruitment and retention of the appropriate number and precise preceptors
(volunteers) are attained. The individual must build and maintain rapport with community preceptors in
order to make assessments and decisions. The Director is a highly visible position within the UNSOM
and physician community in Northern Nevada and statewide and is responsible for communicating the
priorities and expectations of UNSOM to the adjunct clinical faculty. The position consults with the
Associate Dean on student-preceptor problems and when preceptor recruitment goals cannot be
achieved. The individual consults on long-term mission and goal planning of the unit and on budget
development for accomplishment of goals.
Impact:
In order to promote and recruit physicians to the role of adjunct faculty for a community-based medical
school, the position is solely responsible for recruitment and retention of adjunct faculty and
establishment of a strong partnership. Communication is vital to fulfill the mission of UNSOM. If the
Director is unable to recruit the required number of preceptors or is unable to create a solid preceptor
base to ensure reliability, the course program would fail and this could in turn significantly affect all
levels of success for students, departments, UNSOM and the University.
