1. Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the
university. Attach an organizational chart with positions, ranges, and names for the division
which reflects the position in it as well as those supervised in the department. (This section is
used for advertisement of the position.)
The Associate Director for Student Government is a key part of the Associated Students of University
of Nevada (ASUN) Center for Student Engagement (CSE). The Associate Director is responsible for
assessing student engagement and advisement of the ASUN. The position advises and/or has
oversight of all student government entities. The position advises the Student Events Advisory Board,
Legislative clerk and ASUN Archives. Critical to the role is compliance with Nevada Open Meeting
Law and risk management and liability oversight of student events. The Associate Director
supervises administrative faculty and student employees. The position reports to the Director, ASUN
Center for Student Engagement.
2. List the major responsibilities, including percentage of time devoted to each. Provide
enough detail to enable a person outside the department to understand the job (percentage

30% - Supervision and Training
 Supervise, train, and evaluate staff and student employees
 Develop and implement a comprehensive student development model to increase retention,
persistence and graduation of student government officers
 Supervise important Student Life policy including the Student Activities Protocol for Special
Events, the Student Events Advisory Board and student protest and demonstration protocol
 Guide the decision-making around campus-wide student programming
30% - Advising
 Advise the ASUN Speaker of the Senate, undergraduate student senate to include student
senators, and senate committees in decision making processes, strategic planning
 Guide the decision-making regarding student government legislation and student club
activities
 Advise the elections commission
 Advise students on all publications including the Media Board, Nevada Sagebrush, Wolf Pack
Radio, Insight and Brushfire Journal and compliance with journalistic standards
 Advise Senate secretaries and Legislative clerk and ensure compliance with Nevada Open
Meeting Law and Public Records requests
 Develop and implement policies and procedures and communicate NSHE, University and
Student engagement policies and procedures to student leadership, student clubs, employees
and various public entities that co-sponsor programs on the campus
20% - Assessment
 Work with Director to develop, implement and evaluate strategic plans and research
assessment of student government and their initiatives
 Compile data/statistics to support service funding and staffing
 Administer research and assessment of student government and student publications
 Administer and implement strategic plan in relation to division and university goals
 Implement regular assessment of quality of service delivery and make relevant changes based
on assessment results
 Use assessment results to strategically plan for future expansion in accordance with the
University master plan

10% - Management
 Oversee and administer numerous revenue and expenditure budgets with signatory
responsibility and allocate these financial resources
 Monitor contractual obligations of the Associated Students and its clubs and organizations
 Develop and administer student leadership development program
 Be accountable for all student funding and fees collected
 Oversee various student government entities including campus programming, clubs and
organizations, student publications, student senate and Judicial council
 Administer and ensure compliance with Nevada Open Meeting Law by all student government
entities
 Represent the Director in her/his absence
10% - Communication
 Develop and present workshops and seminars at regional and national conferences
 Attend professional development workshops, conferences and trainings
 Represent CSE, Student Life and/or the Division of Student Services in meetings, on
committees and in workgroups both on and off campus
 Communicate with external constituencies including government, law enforcement, and
regulatory agencies to ensure regulation compliance
3. Describe the level of freedom to take action and make decisions with or without
supervision and how the results of the work performed impact the department, division and/or
the university as a whole.
Level of Freedom:
The Associate Director works directly with student government leadership, faculty and upper level
administration including the Associate Vice President and Vice President for Student Services.
Student government decision-making/discussions can be highly energetic and demanding in terms of
needing information and legal precedence. The position must be able to resolve diverse and difficult
problems with innovative solutions and methods. The Associate Director must be able to apply solid
judgment to broad polices, problems and situations that do not clearly fall within precedent.
Impact:
Failure to address safety issues may place the university in adverse legal standing. Failure to fulfill
NRS regulations places the University in adverse legal standing by violating Nevada Open Meeting
law. Failure to adhere to codified processes results in violation of student rights and student
leadership integrity and may necessitate action by the Judicial Council against these failures. Failure
to adhere to highest publication and journalistic standards can place the student journalists, the
publication and the University in adverse legal standing.
