Glossary of Terms
1. Academic year: September to August
a. EX: September 1, 2014 to August 31, 2015
2. Banner ID: For security, Alamo Colleges no longer use students’ social security numbers
as student IDs, instead students are assigned Banner ID numbers as Student ID numbers.
A nine digit number that starts with the number 9.
a. EX: 9XXXXXXXX where X = some number
3. CE Certificate: Is a certificate of completion once a student has completed a CE course
and met all requirements
4. CE: Continuing Education (CE) is a term used for education/training/ professional
development courses for Non-degree seeking individuals.
5. CEU: Continuing Education Units (CEUs) are nationally recognized to record satisfactory
completion of certain approved occupationally-related programs.
6. CRN: Course Reference Number is a five digit number used to identify a specific course
in a specific term.
7. FERPA: An acronym for Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) (20 U.S.C.
§ 1232g; 34 CFR Part 99). It is a Federal law that protects the privacy of student
education records. The law applies to all schools that receive funds under an applicable
program of the U.S. Department of Education.
8. Grades:
a. Pass – ‘P’
b. Not Recorded – ‘NR’
c. Standard Letter Grade – ‘A’, ‘B’, ‘C’, or ‘D’
9. Shared Courses: A shared course is a college- credit course in which CE students may
enroll on a space available basis without registering through college credit.
10. Term: A Continuing Education year broken up into 4 terms.

b. CE Winter
(Dec - Feb)
EX: Dec 2014 – Feb 2015
c. CE Spring
(March - Apr) EX: Mar 2015 – Apr 2015
