Class Warfare: Driving Towards College
Admissions in Top-Tier U.S. Secondary Schools
Featured Speaker: Dr. Lois Weis
Drawing upon a two-year ethnographic investigation of three affluent and elite co-educational
secondary schools in the U.S., this presentation highlights the explicit “class work” of a now highly
insecure middle/upper-middle class, as parents and students attempt to “maintain advantage” via
entrance to particularly located postsecondary destinations.
Lois Weis is State University of New York Distinguished Professor of Sociology of Education at the
University at Buffalo, State University of New York.
