The A star is a whirling dervish (at 258 kps equatorial velocity) and is a spectroscopic
binary. Its luminosity class is uncertain, being sometimes given as II-III or V. Both A
and B have been called "yellowish" even though both are B-types.
Hipparcos/Tycho data show different distances for the AB stars; they may be optical.
They also have different proper motions.
Observations:
C8 at 104x. It lies in the open cluster NGC 1502. It is just east of an 8m double at the
center of the cluster, is very faint and dwarfed by the bright double (STF 485), which is
some 11 times brighter. Some observers report Y and B for STF 485.
Scale model (in which the Sun is the size of a baseball):
Diameter: A = 1.19 inches.
Separation: AB = 189 miles; BC = 56.0 miles; BD = 260 miles; BF = 605 miles;
BG = 148 miles; BH = 1,234 miles.

Magnitude : 6.9
Notes:
This cluster is 20 million years old; its earliest types are B0. There are at least 63
members of this cluster, which orbits the galaxy 30,000 light years out and 350 light
years above its plane.
Observations:
C8 at 83x. An excellent view, with a 7m double 20" apart (STF 485). It looks best at
low powers, with an E-W axis and bleak field. There are many blue stars, and a V-shape
pattern— where the arms of the "V" join, there is a tiny ringlet of stars.
STF 484 is also a member of this cluster (10m/10.5m, 5" in pa132), as well as Espin
122 (8.6m/10.9m, 6" in pa249). STF 485 is also a member (on the E side).
Glenn Bock thinks the cluster suggests the appearance of a crossbow.
C11 at 115x. Small, compact, dominated by a bright pair at the center (STF 485). 24
stars counted, and many pairs.
Model (where the Sun is a baseball):
Its diameter would be 2,030 miles; the stars would be, on average, 272 miles apart.

Notes:
It is a radio source.
It was discovered by William Herschel on November 4, 1788 (H II.768).
NGC 1569 is a galaxy which is probably situated close to the Local Group, and has
been considered as a member galaxy by Arp (1986), together with its neighbor in the sky,
NGC 1560. Today, however, most authors take them as neighboring non-members (e.g.,
van den Bergh 1994); Kraan-Korteweg and Tammann (1979) suggest they might be
members of the Maffei 1 - IC 342 group. As both galaxies lie approximately in the
direction of the neighboring Maffei 1 and the M81 groups, their role in the Local - Maffei
1 Group dynamics might be interesting.
Local Group candidate UGCA 92 is a close neighbor of this galaxy, which may
indicate a physical relationship of some kind.
