Surface brightness: 13.2

Dimensions: 10' x 8'
Magnitude: 8.2
PA: 44
Notes:
It was discovered by Nicholas de Lacaille in 1752. Messier cataloged it on February
17, 1781. He wrote, "it appears as a faint, even light but so difficult to see in the
telescope that the least illumination of the micrometer wires makes it disappear. Only
with much concentration can it be seen at all."
It is 100,000 light years in diameter and is an infrared source. It is a member of the
Centaurus Galaxy Group (along with NGC 4945, 5102, 5253, and 5068).
This galaxy has produced five supernovae in 60 years (SN 1923A, SN 1950B, SN
1957D, SN 1968L (type I), and SN 1983N). What’s going on here? Statistical theory
predicts only 1 supernova per 300 years per average galaxy.
Observations:
C8 at 65x. Large, with bright starlike core. At high powers, it is mottled.
14x70 Binos. Very, very small and faint glob just W of a star that forms the E vertex
of a right triangle.
