In reading, we began our second unit of study. We will be concentrating on the nonfiction genre. Nonfiction includes reference, literary nonfiction, and biography. We started by looking at different text features and how they help us to understand the text.
The students began drafting their first piece. We will continue through the writing process throughout next week. We also worked with verbs this week and talked about how they are an important part of our writing.
We jumped into Module 3 and learned strategies to find our two facts and four facts. Ask your child about the double strategy and how it is used for twos and fours. We have now learned our fives, tens, twos and fours. Your child needs to be practicing these at home.
We started Earth science by discussing shadows and what happens to our shadows throughout the day and why we think this is happening. Your child is coming home with a paper plate and they have been asked to create a sun dial with it this weekend. I am asking them to go outside with it three times during one day on the weekend. They need to go out in the morning, mid day and afternoon and plot where the shadow is and the time. We will be working with this more on Monday, so don’t let your child forget to bring them back on Monday.
