End-to-End Medianet Management For
Secure Scalable Video Surveillance
Simplified Monitoring, Troubleshooting and Resolution of Video Surveillance Quality Issues
Customers are looking for secure, scalable, and simple deployment and operations of
their IP video surveillance environment, especially when video systems are large and
span across multiple locations. Furthermore, security operators need to be able to view
quality video streams, live or archive, for incident investigation. Therefore, when image
quality degradation becomes an issue, both security and network teams need easy and
integrated tools to quickly pinpoint and resolve these issues.
Solution Overview
The End-to-End Medianet Management For Secure Scalable Video Surveillance
solution is an integration of Cisco Video Surveillance Manager, Cisco IP Cameras,
and LiveAction, an application-awareness network performance and QoS control
software from ActionPacked Networks. This joint solution enables customers to gain
unprecedented visibility to video surveillance network components and quickly respond
to performance issues, thus restoring image quality and improving security responses.
The solution components are shown below:
End-to-End Advantage with Medianet
Medianet-enabled video quality monitoring statistics such as jitter, delay and other
metrics are reported from network devices and MSI-capable endpoints such as Cisco
IP Cameras and Video Surveillance Media Server. In the following example, users
can get an accurate view of the video quality performance as streams pass through
the network via Medianet Performance Monitor metrics. Furthermore, the Mediatrace
feature provides hop-by-hop performance measurements such as loss, jitter and
latency enabling easy diagnosis of the underlying problem impacting video quality.
Medianet allows users to answer questions such as:
• Is the quality of the session degrading?
• What/where is the problem? What paths?
A typical scenario enables a security officer at a client workstation looking at millions of
video surveillance streams and detecting a quality issue, to call the IT Help Desk who,
through LiveAction’s simple interface and visualization, is able to troubleshoot and fix
these issues efficiently. This results in richer user experiences, increased productivity,
cost savings, and most importantly preserved security information.

LiveAction consumes and presents Medianet flows in a highly intelligent topology and endto-end flow visualization which enables network administrators to easily see performance
issues through color coded device and interface status and other QoS indicators.
Pre-deployment Assessment and Capacity Planning
Prior to deploying rich media applications, users can perform pre-deployment capacity
assessment and planning. Using IP SLA VO, users can determine whether the current
network is able to support new video applications. One would be able to simulate what
happens—if several surveillance cameras, TelePresence, desktop videos and tens of
WebEx meeting clients all operating at the same time—by generating and simulating RTP
streams with IP SLA VO. LiveAction enables easy GUI-based IP SLA VO tests by loading
up the network with test RTP streams to ascertain if it is ready for new video services.
Benefits
The End-to-End Medianet Management For Secure Scalable Video Surveillance solution
helps you to:
• Scale to thousands of devices and millions of devices
• Streamline deployments of new cameras
• Simplify trouble shooting with end-to-end visualization of video flows and ondemand Mediatrace from Medianet-enabled cameras to Media Servers
• Quickly fix video performance issues with GUI-based QoS control features hiding
CLI complexity
• Perform pre-deployment assessment and capacity planning
In addition, LiveAction makes Mediatrace capability easy to use by simply selecting the
flow to troubleshoot, automatically invoking the commands and display the results with
colors to indicate conditions at each location for easy analysis.
